Don't recommend hurting wildlife. They are doing what comes naturally. Instead use a layer of small rocks/gravel or get some plastic mesh to cut on top of the potting soil and keep it secured with a couple of larger rocks. These solutions are longer lasting, don't hurt any animals and don't need to be repeatedly frequently.

I dont think a little sting of hot pepper is going to ’hurt’ them that bad. Im absolutely sick and tired of them.

They are very destructive and have destroyed a patio area of mine, and a front porch of my brothers. Not to mention tearing up the gardens!

I don't have a chipmunk problem, but do have a rabbit problem and the cayenne pepper did nothing to stop them.

I believe that the cayenne pepper gets on their paws and then into their eyes. Ouch! Can you imagine having that in your eyes? But I do hear your frustration. Sounds like they are very hungry. Is there something for them to eat? I have lots of pots and lots of squirrels. When my husband built a raised bed (x2), I figured the squirrels would love the fluffy soil in the bed. So I got some plastic mesh and put it down in the entire bed. It helped a lot. I also learned that my having a bird feeder made the problem worse. So I don't feed the birds in the summer or fall. Not until my pots are protected or put away. Otherwise the squirrels find the seed remnants and dig in my pots to hide the seed for the winter.

Happy to report...their daily digging has ended!!

Newhostalady no I dont have any feeders, I stopped that many years ago.

They're going to pick up on that hot pepper scent before tracking through it -- it acts as a deterrent, I doubt they're going to be getting it on them.
