its a hybrid between red and silver maple (freeman maple)

Begs the question how it got there as per the range map the only part of fl silver maple ranges into is along the applachiacola river in the panhandle.

I have seen a few others like this one so I suppose some silver maple genes could have made it further down.

Worth noting the traditional freemans maple from northern stock will not grow here, tried it and it died going into one of our summers.

The hybrid is commonly planted in areas like parking lots, etc -- could be a seedling from one. Red maple has a huge range & goes further south than silver.

Yes red maple is very common here, but the cultivated hybrid freemans maple is not planted around at all here, never seen one planted in florida. One I tried planted one from a northern us source did not survive. Anyhow this is far away from a cultivated setting being on a trail in a natural area. When it sets seed I will have to collect some seeds, as it would be nice to have so heat hardy hybrid freeman maples in cultivation.
