So the ring is threaded and is supposed to sit inside the glass cylinder? You're 100% sure about that? I always start by thinking "how was this possible at the time of initial installation". From what you describe, it wouldn't have been -- unless perhaps the plastic ring was originally adhered to the glass so you could do the whole thing by just turning the cylinder? Does that seem like it might be the logical explanation, and then the adhesive just weakened over time? If so, you could try using some kind of multi-surface adhesive to glue the ring back in, let it dry, and then try again.

Ooh that's a thought! I think it is original to the house (2007). Yes, the threaded ring is all that holds glass globe in place. But even if I succeed in getting that on somehow, the bulb still has to be screwed back in AFTER - and I do not know how the heck to screw it back in since I can barely manipulate 2 fingers to screw (cylinder super narrow). It's nuts!!!!!

What you are describing doesn't make sense somehow. It worked before, so it must be able to work again. My guess is that the ring should be attached to the fixture, not the cylinder. Then, you install the bulb, and then screw the cylinder back on. Why don't you unscrew the middle cylinder and see how it's installed?

this is called a check ring, and yes it goes inside. what else would hold the glass on, so im confused by all the people saying are you sure? Anyway they come with a part that is made to fit up inside the fixture and hang onto the treaded ring, people always throw them away. the tong idea is not a bad one.

This is also meant for a T style light bulb or an A 15 not a full size light bulb, but you can put a suction cup on the end of the bulb and hold onto that.

Long story short, I ended up just replacing the globe with a shorter, wider one. And yes, I realize I need the smaller/shorter bulbs, but for now I'm just happy to have found a solution for less than $20 total!
