The Old House Design Dilemma Remodeling

making this lift a usable bedroom

I want to wall this room off or better yet, make a small lofted area so we can use the space behind the chimney and put the bed perpendicular over the stairs. What can be done?

To me it looks like you do not have the headroom to create a platform even above handrail height of any useful width. You have to be able to go up and down the stairs without ducking.

Mind the framing underneath and how much space it will take up. Are you planning to open up the walls and tie the framing to the studs? A ledger board over the drywall and fastened to the studs is not going to be a good look....

What you want to do is do-able but mind the details.
