No. I sometimes sell on fb but there is a lot of fraud there. Like Cooper I sell for local pickup only. Even then, I get offers of questionable types of payments all the time, I insist on cash only. And lately there has been an uptick of the data gatherers who will immediately say they want your item and you need to call or text them, I ignore those.

I've not had a ton of luck there, but only list items for local pickup - cash only. What you describe is definately a scam.

Never ever ever, send any items through the mail via facebook marketplace. Do not accept payment. Do not pass go. Delete and block. I only sell to people who can come to my door to pick up. They will almost ALL try to talk you into selling for less. A lot will come to your home after agreeing to the value in messenger, only to ask to buy for less at your door, which I HATE! I've never lowballed anyone. As a matter of fact, a woman sold a brand new hand crocheted blanket for $10. I refused to pay $10 and gave her $50 knowing the yarn alone had to cost that much. It was a gift she never used. It hadn't even been washed. I felt bad only giving her $10.

i sell through my DD's page. i do transfer at public elementary school on a main road. i don't want anyone coming to my house.

the few things i have sold, the buyer bargains before price is agreed upon. i have not had anyone offer a lower price once i have met them for the transfer.

My experience selling via Facebook has been very different from Deb's, I'm happy to say. I sold lots of stuff in 2020 on the honor system: Buyers came to my garage, took the items, and left money in the zip-loc bag I left for the purpose. No one ever asked for a lower price when they got here. Many of the items were too large to ship, but some were small. I was surprised at how many people were willing to drive all the way down my dirt road.

We gave away some stuff this way too--three used bicycles, a non-working lawnmower, even a toilet I wanted to get rid of. We still use FB Marketplace occasionally, most recently to give away scrap metal and sell some baby equipment.

I've never shipped anything via Facebook, but I belong to a reselling group on FB and a lot of the members sell and ship that way. I haven't heard any complaints.

However, no matter which selling platform you use, never ship anything before you're paid.

I have sold, and bought, only on my locally-moderated, local fb markets. We do not use the Marketplace buy and sell functions.

It comes close to ensuring that purchases are legitimate and fair, and if someone does not follow the rules, they are out.

I do have to sell a couple of items that will have to go on a larger group beyond my community's borders, I'll see how that goes. But it's still very local, so hopefully it will go well.

I have sold three items that I mailed on FB Marketplace but I made sure they paid me before I sent it.

My only bad transaction I had on FB was when a woman offered to buy a pair of boots and asked if I could bring them to the restaurant where she worked. It was in Scranton, where I had to be one day that week anyway, so I said sure. She gave me her cell number, and we agreed to meet in the restaurant's parking lot. It's a big restaurant, and I'm very familiar with it. I called her when I got there, but my call was blocked. I figured she'd forgotten to unblock her phone, so I went inside and asked an employee if they could find her for me. They never heard of her. One of the employees kindly offered to go into the kitchen and another spot where servers are likely to be, and it turned out no one heard of her.

I don't know what the woman's deal was. I messaged her when I got home, but she didn't respond.

In general, I've found footwear difficult to sell. I don't know why. Mine were brand new and unworn. I ended up donating the boots, and some others, to our animal shelter's thrift shop.

Hmmm the person who messaged me claims he lives about an hour away. I requested we meet up at a busy Target between our two suburbs. I can't imagine what type of scam if he agrees to meet me in person. FWIW due to a glitch Facebook lists me as living in China not Chicago suburbia so he has no information but my name. I tried several times to sell on Nextdoor Neighbor site and had no responses. Ah well one of my grandsons will fit the boots eventually........

I haven't sold anything on FB marketplace. I do use my local ( they are all very very local) buynothing group and have used nextdoor as well. I think it varies by location but my nextdoor is not too lively. I did give away a pool table on nextdoor before I knew of buynothing.

I have heard lots of scams through phone numbers and identities.

I think it's a great idea if you are going to meet someone to do it at a very public place (shopping center parking lot, restaurant) and I recall that many police departments around here have an area in the parking lot where they encourage use for this. I always thought that was a great idea.

Rho Dodendron In your first post you said this person wanted you to ship the boots to him and pay after he receives them. That's why we said no, because it sounds like a typical scam. I seriously doubt this person is going to agree to meet you in person.

I just started trading on Facebook, and before I had a problem with getting promoted there and gaining credibility. Well, that's understandable, because I'm a newbie and didn't understand anything about maintaining a page. Now I have purposefully taken care of its design, even made a cover for it here. On the Internet I found a source with good templates. In terms of advertising, the cover plays a crucial role. After all, any user visiting your page the first thing he pays attention to the design. And if it catches, he stays on the page and starts to view it purposefully.

Hmmf I got one message last week from someone in Colorado who wanted to meet up with me knowing full well I am in Illinois.

Today I was message from someone who wanted to meet me in 2 hours to buy the boots. I messaged him 'Yes'--the main (common suburb name but no state) police dept foyer and was message back "O.K"

Rho, I can't tell if it's a scam from what you wrote. Is this Craigslist or Facebook? If Facebook, you might be able to look up the name. In any case, I would have asked, "Where are you located?" That's always my first question.

Facebook. This is the 2nd time someone contacted me and wanted to meet up within hours. I thought if I suggested a police station giving a town name but no state the person would stop messaging me. I just can't figure out what the scam is.

I've been wondering what the scam is for people who arrange to meet but are no-shows too. I use a specific gmail address and pseudonym for my FB and Craigslist items, so my name is hidden and no other information. I have wondered if they respond in the hopes of getting such information.

I always put in my posts that communication will be via Craigslist email relay (or FB), no phone calls or texts. Still, about half of the people ask me to text.

FB marketplace is the worst for getting dozens of "is this item available" messages with no further communication.

I wonder if some of the no-shows are just power plays. They get no money from it, but they might get some sort of kick. I also think some of them get talked out of the purchase by their spouses--or maybe by themselves. One contrite young man cancelled at the last minute because his wife told him he didn't really need my Pink Floyd song books. :-)

I've only sold one thing on market place. That was a car and it went off with no problems. I've heard there are a few of scams going on with any of the sell/buy sites.

I had one lady that was leary of me when I wanted to purchase her 2 matching 1950s twin headboards for a bedroom set i already had. I've been looking and these headboards were a perfect match. She lived an hour away in the next state and I had to convince her that i was legit. It was nice weather and a beautiful day for a drive anyway.

A few years back there was this lady on local FB groups that would cry poverty wanting kids items posted for sale for free or way below asking. Stating her little kids really wanted the item and gave a big sob story. She didn't even live close to the area. If you didn't budge on the price she would set up a pick up date and time then ghost you, just because she was a jerk. The items were never intended for her kids. She had an ongoing garage sale every weekend selling the items she got for free or cheap. She was called out and was banded from the local groups.

I completely understand the listings that state, "This item is available until this listing is deleted" because I always get a rush of "Is this available?" within SECONDS of posting my listings. These are always scammers that just want my google/verizon/other code. They have some kind of coding program set up to auto-generate the "Is this available?" message as soon as listings hit. So, I now ignore all but customized messages (like "I really like this. Does it have any damage?" or "Can you confirm that this is 11x17?")

ah HA--that is how someone knew I live outside Chicago despite FB profile listing my hometown as somewhere in China.
