It is impossible to tell what Hydrangea that is other than it’s a macrophylla.

Is that a current photo? If so possibly your winters are too cold for it. They should have passed peak bloom and be on their way out at this time of year.

Hydrangea macrophyllas in zone 5 can be bloom unreliable. If this one blooms only on old wood, it produces flower buds in late summer/fall and will require -regardless of variety name- morning sun only thru 11am, 3-4” of organic mulch, fertilizer after your average date of last frost and three months before your average date of first frost, evenly moist soil, winter protection and late frost protection to save the flower buds thru winter/early spring. A hydrangea macrophylla that reblooms and grows no taller than 3 feet (varieties from the Tuff Series or the Let’s Dance Series) may be more bloom reliable. Smooth Hydrangeas (hydrangea arborescens) will be even more bloom reliable in the same type of planting location as that used for hydrangea macrophyllas.

I'm surprised it survived the winter in a pot in zone 5. if if keeps dying to the ground every year, you'll never get blooms.

it wasn't in a pot last year, my parents just potted it to give to me. I'm trying it in a morning sun location in my yard, how should I protect it this winter to encourage blooms next year?
