Kitchen layout feedback

We are working on a small addition and kitchen expansion. Our designer laid out the kitchen (image #1) with a cooktop, wall oven, and 48 in wide island, but we fell like it makes the aisles too small (about 36 in), it could go down to a 36 in wide island to get up to 42 in aisles, but we are also not sure about having one aisle end in the hallway. Redesigned to image #2 with a slide-in range and L-shaped counter that would allow for a couple of seats. The living room wall then flows directly to the kitchen opening. Would love some feedback and even other ideas people might have. Totally new to this so thanks in advance for being patient with me!

I like #2 better. I hate having to maneuver around an island to go from stove to fridge.

considering 14 ft 8 in across long wall .....you can form L shape instead of U shape that you are attempting. place the fridge to left of sink and eliminate the lower side wall of cabinets. then extend island to 60 in and you still can have 48 in aisle between island and stove . the drawer cabinets in a 60 in island will be nicer as no corner and they will be opposite the sink along with nicer counter there. This 3 walled space is not that connected to living room so having the better island seating makes staying and lingering a little nicer for people . You plan for a day to day seating area in dining room??? its still nice to have a comfortable island in a kitchen this big I think. sometimes people put the sink on the island and place stove and fridge either side of window in which case the island could be even longer if nothing were on side walls.... there are opinions about sinks on islands which has no definite conclusion.....personal choice. first pic shows fridge and stove on a rear wall/sink on island,,,,,,,,2nd pic uses rear wall for sink/fridge and stove likely on a side wall [cant see that part] think about shifting appliances so a nicer island results.....depends on what you wish for the lg space you have.

Just want to tell you that your instinct on the aisle width is correct - 36" is too narrow. The width on plans is from cabinet to cabinet, so after the countertops are installed (with overhangs) you lose more inches. I have found 48" to be ideal. It's especially important when it's the distance between the dishwasher, stove or frig to an opposite surface.

The most important change to make is to move your DW to the other side of the sink, so it's not between the sink and the range. Herbflavor's layout suggestion is a great idea. My experience with a similar but smaller U layout is that the countertop just above the DW got heavy use for cleaning. The rest of the countertop between sink and fridge tended to fill with clutter. And even when clean, got used for little. So eliminating that long run and having more island work space is helpful. Also agree with kandrewspa, you need 42" minimum aisle. 48" is better. It doesn't make sense to build a large work space with aisles that are too narrow for good function.

Neither. Make the perimeter an L shape with the longer wall along the back. Put the fridge on the left side, then the dishwasher, then your sink. Keep the stove where it is. Keep the island. On the left side make the aisle 36" since it wouldn't be a working aisle. On the right where the cooktop is, make it 48".

@cpartist @herbflavor @mcarroll16 Thank you. You had similar ideas, want to see if I got your input correct though. Is this what you were describing when going to an L shape and keeping the island?

Yes, that's it exactly (at least for me). Use all-drawer units in your island and you can store dishes and silverware there, for easy unloading from the dishwasher. You probably need a spacer between the wall and the fridge in order to fully open the fridge door.

@mcarroll16 I was thinking that with the fridge too, or possibly swap the fridge and panty.

you could insert a 12 in pantry left of fridge as the fridge cant be hitting side wall anyway..... ...move single bowl sink to the right side of window and have the 2nd pantry on stove wall at 18-21 inch width. consider a small entertainment sink on the island .......in your size space I would consider splitting pantry into 2 spots . small kitchens not always the case...heres narrow for next to fridge for certain things..... and a little wider over on stove wall..... next to fridge is one of the better spots even if narrower.

@herbflavor I like the idea of a pantry to the left of the fridge, but with only 50 inches between the edge of the window and the wall I think it would be too tight.
