Pull back a portion of the carpet where the cabinets will be and

install the cabinets on the sub floor. . Then re install the carpet.

@functionthenlook. I wish the old owners had run the same hardwood that is in the kitchen and dining into the living......but no such luck.

I cut away the carpet--a space just a wee bit smaller than the footprint of the the cabinets I was building rather than pulling it up and rolling it back. Eliminate a tripping hazard.

Angela Pile, Actually I prefer carpet over hardwood. It is cozy in the long freezing winter months and doesn't scratch or dent. Most people put in hardwood and then put rugs covering most of the hardwood anyway.

IMO why builtin s at all I use Besta from Ikea for this type of storage . TV and display it sits on the carpet and goes with you when you move and the plus is you put it together for exactly what you need for your life . I am not a big lover of a bunch of shelves filled with stuff .This is just one idea.
