is 42” range hood too big for my kitchen?

the hood shown in pic was just included by KD for the sake of the rendering. the range is 36” with a griddle and from all i’ve read via numerous posts, it should be 42 wide. i’m considering the prestige convex that is 42 wide by 24 deep but the KD thinks it might be too much for this kitchen size. no uppers on this side of kitchen but rather open shelving. i guess you could call it a wide walk thru galley.

I think that hood will look great besides getting great functionality from it. Like so many designers, your KD is more into looks than into understanding the needs of a hood exhaust, especially when there will be a griddle. How many CFMs is the hood? Make sure your duct that goes from the hood to outside is sized appropriately.

I must warn you that a griddle on a 36" range is small. Make sure you see it in real life. It may be a better choice to get an adjunct griddle that you can put away when not needed. It will also be a more useful size when you do need it. Furthermore, there are complaints that some of the built-in griddles don't get hot enough. See the photo - does the built-in griddle on the 36" range have this kind of space?

For a stovetop griddle, America's Test Kitchen likes the Calphalon Classic Double Griddle for its 177 inches of cooking space, but it looks like it's discontinued. They also like the Cuisinart MCP45-25NS.

(I personally like a separate electric griddle. They have a lot of space, and you can put them on the counter while still having your entire range free to cook other things. You can also do breakfast outside with them as long as you have an outlet on the patio. Broil King is a good brand for electric griddles.)

thank you! he definitely had me second guessing bc while i want the wider hood for health benefits and less leftover cooking odors, i am concerned about aesthetics too.

the griddle should be fine bc i mostly cook for one! i will
use it to pan sear fish and make pancakes for the grandkids!

I would never buy a range with a builtin griddle to me a huge expensive choice for no benefit .But as for the hood I often use the same size hood as range just up the CFMs BTW no open shelving next to a range IMO it will only add many hrs to cleaning over the years . I just use a griddle that spans 2 burners a well made cast iron one $50 I use mine alot on the weekends no issues .I run a catering biz form my home my hood is the same size as my range and I do a lot of wok cooking but my hood is 1200CFM

interesting! i’ve already purchased the range and the griddle is perfect for what i need. i definitely do not cook professionally tho; just for myself (quite often alone) and then for family and friends when they visit.
it’s 95000 BTUs so they recommend 1000 cfm amd the range hood i’m
looking at is 1200 CFMs. but more importantly i want to have a large capture area.

however, my concern is about aesthetics. i guess i should have made that clear.
