Compare with Salix nigra and Salix caroliniana.

Willows are fairly common in the Atlanta area from seed. Cut them to the ground and they will grow back 20 times the amount of limbs to over 8 feet in one season. We've had one by our deck for years despite cutting it to the ground almost every year.

unl3ss you have a fairway.. as in golf course.. imo.. just stay away from willow ... especially free ones you find infesting parking lots of abandoned industrial complexes ... boy that was a mouthful ....

as to taking cutting in august ... probably not the best time ot do it ... but on the other hand.. its a willow.. you could probably let them dry for a day..and just shove them in the ground where you want them.. and 1 out of 3 will root in place ... yeah.. they are weeds ...

but i bet there are better times to take cutting for rooting.. and im sure you could find that online.. or someone will tell you here ... wild guess in spring.. when the buds are barely expanding ...

There are no seeds in the pictures. Willow seed is fluffy, like poplars, and is spread by the wind, not birds.

There are some pros and cons to consider. Apparently they are more attractive at the stage this tree is in now. I grew an Arctic Willow once and maintained a similar attractive bushy shape by cutting back the main stem.

Salix caroliniana is a similar story, and it will have suckers coming up around the main plant.

The willow that volunteered at our deck usually blooms before the new leaves start appearing.

The seeds are carried away on fluff which blows in the wind and, being dioecious, only the female plants bear seeds. Your plant looks to be male, given the pollen bearing catkins..

Thanks everyone. I think it is probably the Salix Nigra because the underside of the leaves is green. If any of them root I may try it in a pot for a while. It looks like it requires too much real estate.

Willow is often coppiced. If you don’t mind the work you can keep it in bounds.
