You can put mid century furniture in a traditional house. It's calling for a table and art above it.

The trim is definitely not traditional as it can go both ways. The house has gorgeous trim all over the walls. The decor is all mid century modern/glam. Just looking for ideas for this upstairs hallway niche. The space is narrow (can’t fit anything over 45”). Everything I like is atleast 47”

I would put nothing but a beautiful bold bright modern piece of art in that niche.

I think a cabinet with lights and glass would look gorgeous there, with carefully selected objets d’art.

Edit: I like ptreckel’s idea of just art, too, especially if you don’t really need a piece of furniture. A striking piece of art would look nice with a light over it — would have a gallery-type feel and be cool at night.

I would not be in a terrible hurry to fill the space. I would be looking for that perfect statement piece that will make my heart sing every time I went past it.

Depending on what you find you may need a bench or a table to ground the object. It can be wall art or sculpture.

I collect wildlife art and can see a 6' giraffe and a tall african basket filling the space.

I could also do some MCM pendant lights with a small table and a pair of vases and a velvet covered book

I'm currently looking for the perfect piece of driftwood to display a paper wasp next that I found in a tree in my back yard (abandoned).

My sister just got a huge copper sign from her husband as a 40th anniversary gift. As much as I dislike word art, like my sister, I would have placed this is a place of honor in my home.

Why not remove the chair rail and the applied trim, just in the niche. Find a mid century feel peel and stick wallpaper....

You probably will get an area rug, so keep the two compatible.

What are you going to do with the rest of the wall to the right? Can you include all of it in a photo?

If you have a home with this level of details and wall trim $$$$$, there better be some major ART in this home.

Since there is a wall outlet and no overhead light I would recommend the niche receive a sculpture I believe it was intended to receive.

A simple piece of art glass placed on a lighted pedestal would look perfect there.

I believe you can order them in a variety of sizes and perhaps a rectangular shape works best in this niche.

Looks like the perfect place for a decor accent or a display case!

No one needs random seating in a hallway unless it's a museum, and niches are a death sentence for live trees that require a minimum number of footcandles to actually live.

Art — but it is too personal to make suggestions. You can visit galleries online or locally or look at chairish, first dibs. Some of my favorite online galleries are design supply shop and partnership editions. Often you can find an online presence for art galleries you have visited. For example, Thompsons galleries in London. I personally love a lot of English artists like Emma Williams, Camilla Perkins and Jessica Kaye— I am not suggesting them specifically but suggesting you find artists whose work you adore. I also like to buy art from places I travel to remember the places and locally to support artists. I echo another poster that whatever you love is what you should put there :) rather than speaking about art as midcentury—sorry, art history and art minor degree here :) think about styles you like. Pop, abstract, realism, painting, photography… I also think a large piece is going to look best and you can Google dimensions.

A backlit full-size statue of a human being in any style/period you like or can find that is large enough. These two examples are over and under sized for your area; I think actual real size is nice for that area..

as for the bench, it's for decoration, not for actual usage.

No one needs a museum bust or a art gallery display stand in the niche either.

My first response was a nice piece of art with or without the bench. I just threw that in there as another option since there is an obvious inset for something.
