The rug and pillows are not definite and can go.

If you can consider pulling rug and sofa forward about a foot. Straighten the 2 chairs closer to sofa. Add pretty lamp to the end tables.

In my world formal means curtain panels. You have a very small space there and the light is soo poor I can see no color definition. Note the lack of a lot of seating in the realtor pics. I am thinking one coffee table and two floor lamps would be sufficient, if you think you need all that seating.

Remove all those pillows from what looks like a loveseat .You need table lamps and I never like all matching tables but you have them now . IMO a formal LR still needs to look inviting and make sure you actually use it . My clients often use theris if they have one for drinks before dinner or after I think this space either has a use or not and in this case please use it it you have it. I do agre some nice drapes and I would lose those blinds no formal look to those .I certainly think you need 4 seats in a LR

Go for drama, drama, drama. You already have formal furniture which looks beautiful.

Start with the window treatments. Arched windows are always a dilemma, but when done correct can be enchanting. Below are some pics. Consider adding moulding or painting the trim black. Add trims and borders on the curtains and maybe several fabrics. Don't skimp. Don't ignore the arch and incorporate them into the treatments.

Because the room seems dark, consider a vibrant area rug. My suggestion is an Art Deco Chinese rug as large as possible. I recently scored one for a client on craigsllst of all places! It's the gorgeous dark blue one with the cranes in the pic below. With your furniture, the colors of these rugs are perfect.

I am sorry to tell you that the glass tables are the wrong fit with the style of the sofa and chairs. You can use the small glass tables next to the lounge chairs when entering, but the coffee table does not complement the style, as it is too modern.

Find round wood end tables to go on either side of the sofa with traditional lamps. The tables don't have to match as long as they are the same height. Lamps are like the jewelry of the room, so search for the right ones. I will do some search around and make some suggestions for the coffee table and lamps.

A successful interior design project is about layering with textures, accessories, lighting and art (and of course, music !!). Don't feel you have to rush to complete you living room. Find what you love and it will be beautiful and inviting.

BTW I agree with others that there are too many pillows on the sofa. Figure out the rug and window treatment first and then look for new pillows (which are easy to find).

The wrought iron railing, tufted Chesterfield sofa and grid of the floor tiles are the busy elements in the room, so be careful not to add to the "noise" they're making. Unless you hang inside mounted drapes like Denise shows, you really have no walls for art unless it is opposite the sofa. Come in the front door as if you are a guest and see what the first thing you focus on is. The door swing makes people face a wall that is topped by more busy wrought iron. What will be there that pulls their eye down and introduces you, your style and sets the tone for what to expect as they turn to face the living space? I don't think the living area is the first thing guests will see, but likely the second. What do you want them to focus on once the door closes behind them? Right now it will be the railing, columns and dining room. That's pretty busy; if you want to soften that, consider putting the two chairs there, as they have simple upholstery and high backs that can hold their own with and partly hide the powerful decor behind them. Then you may decide to place the sofa in front of the other window facing the chairs, adding a console and pair of lamps under the window where the sofa is now. I think you should return the three tables and keep shopping. Once you find the right coffee table, pull all of the seating pieces 18" from it and see what size rug would be large enough so all of them are sitting on it. Your current rug is one more busy item in the room, so look for less pattern. If you want to go glam, and you can, try a white flokati rug for texture but less pattern.

Drapes will give a “cocoon” feeling to this area, which will make it more inviting. I agree with a more dramatic traditional rug to add some color, but decide what you want it to be since it will be dominant.

Love the idea of getting the chairs to hide the railing at the entrance. Move them and see how they look.

The glass tables are definitely fighting your goal. Remove them and look for traditional but “lightweight” wooden side tables. Lamps will be easier to pick after you find the right side tables. Look for antique ones on FB Marketplace, Craigslist, etc.

Pillow choices are last.

I posted rose pillows for your current rug, an idea to use the color more. If glass coffee table lets the rug show more, seems ok. End tables in the corners could be anchoring if solid wood as was already said... to square/ enlarge the seating area -- with tall-ish table lamps too.

I have some ideas for you / but first, just want to say you have some very nice pieces and a great start!

btw, if you happen to have children in the space, please consider opting out of the glass table. The best choice with children would be an ottoman style for a coffee table, and I think a leopard or a cheetah print, or one with a bold color and/or pattern could be fabulous in your space. If you do use glass, please make sure it is tempered glass. Also, round shapes are always better with children as well. With a soft ottoman, you can use any shape, though.

If you don’t have children and you prefer glass, for a bit more drama - you can look for a table that has a black glass top - in tempered glass. I think a black top would add more definition and drama - along these lines:

Suggest finding the right combination of formal/informal and ensure it feels inviting, or it will be rarely used. Look on line for inspiration.

The style of the accent pieces will play a big part (if you can change tables) and be sure to tie in a piece on the opposite wall that complements coffee table, etc. (where previous owner had a console).....and don’t match everything and formal can be modern.

Suggest lined linen drapes and new blinds (if needing daytime privacy). Could add a console under window and move couch to other window. I think room might feel more interesting and balanced.

Decide on lighting, art, and look for lux cushions that work better with your rug and use sparingly on couch and add matching lombard cushions on chairs.

I think you need a much larger rug, in bolder colors. As someone mentioned, your glass/acrylic? coffee table is not traditional formal. Also, plaid says 'casual,' so the plaid pillows are absolutely not right for the look you are going for, and they certainly don't work with the tufted sofa. Good start, though, but solid color simple, elegant draperies would look great.

Working with the furniture, you need texture to warm it up. Notice color of rug, drapes, ottoman, pillows. Comes down to one accent color.

Contrast is your friend, therefore a rug, lamps, pillows and art added to your Traditional furnishings will make your room complete.

This is ours from various angles.

Perhaps you can put the chairs as a pair on the big window wall, add a lounge chair opposite the corner walls between the sofa and the pair of chairs.

Either keep the matching end tables and get a new cocktail table, or keep the cocktail table and get different matching or non matching end tables. The sofa is so pretty, I would not use any throw pillows, and just put narrow wide pillows, one on each chair.

Introduce a color in the lounge chair, add a floor lamp for it and a pretty Chinese stool as an end table for the lounge chair.

Simple curtains, with a possible color border on edges and hem that relates to a color in the lounge chair. Just some thoughts.

Change out your lamps to a color lamp, either solid or small pattern in a color and white.

I had the same windows as yours in my previous home office and did the drapes as @Maureen showed you in her first photo. It allows the arched window to give you light but the vertical panels can be closed for privacy. This is not expensive to do, which is a consideration.

Jz…the rug has a shag finish and really will not wear well..you will see wear very quickly and it is hard to vacuum…look for similar neutral but not a shag.
