Hi there, are you planning to keep the green area rug? What are some of the other color(s) you have throughout your home? Do you perfer color or a neutral palette?

Hi there! The green rug can be changed out, I do love the color but the couch is more of a priority. There is a dark green in the back of the bookshelves. I prefer neutrals with a pop of color (greens, blue tones ) :)

Go for a neutral color and a reversible chaise for the most long term flexibility with the sofa.

Weighing in--not a pro. Beautiful room with a lot of possibilities! Ditto decoenthusiaste bc layout needs to change. It is tough bc room appears to be a large square. The TV now is too high, but other placements have sofa with back to the wood stove. Plus, wherever the TV ends up, couch needs to be close to it.

What about floating a couch to face the blank wall by the stools? Place TV there. Behind the floating couch, create a cozy conversation area around the wood stove. Dining area could stay.

If you still want the TV up high, bring the couch closer where it is floating and facing it. Create conversation area behind the sofa. I'll see what pics are on Houzz, but I've seen back to back sofas or 2 chairs and a sofa table behind a floating couch.

Thank you for your input! I was thinking about getting one of the frame TVs so it will look like a picture when we’re not watching TV. I don’t want a lot of tv so having it higher up isn’t that big of a dilemma, I typically read on the couch which is why I want the fireplace to be a focal point.

I was also hoping to mount the Tv, I believe there are adjustable mounts that would allow the tv to come out and down???

There are adjustable pull down TV mounts, but the Samsung frame TV comes with its own mount that is very flat and would not pull down. It also needs to be connected to the One Connect box.

I didn’t think about getting rid of those shelves behind the couch because it’s a blank wall. I was hoping to use the built ins for decor and keep the other ones for books but perhaps your idea would make the room less distracting!

The sofa looks more beige for me than gray. It is neutral color and would work great in your living room. But I vote for blue sofa, more appealing to me.

Navy would be my choice, if the color scheme will be complementary to the adjoining areas. Before deciding on sectional‘s configuration, decide on the layout. You mentioned it was important to create a good entertaining area, so you may find you’ll need an additional chair or two (look for a lighter, larger rug to ground the area). Try an on line room planner to test different options.

Room feels very busy with so much shelving. The painted door in the middle of the white bookcase (as well as the painted backs) add to this feeling. I would paint them white, so accessorizes become more prominent and to feel calmer. The three bookcases could be placed next to each other, painted navy and reconsider book arrangement (white bookcase also). There is a lot of advice/pictures on Pinterest.

If it were me, I’d create a lovely focal wall instead, for more personality.

Look at inspiration pictures and have a plan, before purchasing anything. For example, I found this room and love everything about it. Good luck finding your inspiration.

I agree with removing the freestanding bookshelves and relocating the contents to the built-ins. Hang large scale art in place of the bookcases. I also vote for the navy sofa. Without knowing the dimensions of the space, I can't advise on orientation but I might also consider a standard sofa and chairs. Def add curtains to the windows. This is the best I could do with the tan sofa but not crazy about it:

Pics with floating couches, plus traditional couch and 2 chairs around fireplace. You could also pull your new sectional closer to the wood stove and Wales chair, have it open to the front door, and put the books in the built ins.

Happy New Year! How are you? Any updates?

Lately everyone is so obsessed with beige and white, it's soooooooooooooooo boring!!!!

So it's refreshing to see your space with color and darker tones and wood!

I vote for the blue. Blue looks so nice with wood! If you like the rug, the grey would look better. Otherwise, I vote for the blue and a new rug :)

I like your existing sofa. It just needs 28" toss pillows and perhaps new legs to boost the seating height. Legs are easily changed out. IMO the blue and the gray will not look good on the existing rug, another expense.

I would spend the money on replacing the way too short bookcases on the back wall.

My daughter has the couch in the blue. It is a very pretty color

can you draw out a floor plan, i think that would help a lot. the way the space is now is very confusing to me.

A little over a year later and here we are! I changed out the rug and painted the book shelves. Looking for new bar stools now. Any suggestions on putting art over the bookshelves behind the couch? Could I transfer all books to the built in and get rid of those ? What about side tables next to the couch? Open to any and all ideas :)

Love the changes! IMO unless you reeeeally love those shelves, I think you have enough shelves with the built ins and would just use those and put something else behind the couches! Just art or maybe a console or something

If the books can fit in the beautiful built-in, I would live with that area left alone for a few weeks. Maybe a console behind the couch will be a good idea. Maybe a table or desk. But the current situation looks like the darker shelves need the books.

Oh, thanks for the updates! You did quite a bit--curtains, rug, painting the shelves which I know was a lot of work! Yes, put the books in your built ins!

Are you keeping the couch or still thinking about a sectional? With the new colors, you might consider brown leather or beige/tan.

If you keep the freestanding shelves, push them together to look like a built in.

Love those beams! It is coming along nicely!
