I have no idea but it’s a very unfriendly looking spot with all those thorns and a carpet of poison ivy.

From the remaining round green leaves this looks like Smilax rotundifolia or common greenbrier. Very common in my area

Are you sure it's not some sort of bramble berry?

Consider Rosa multiflora

I agree. R. multiflora is a good possibility. Rosa multiflora literally can grow anywhere that is not desert or arctic, and because the seeds are spread by birds, they DO grow anywhere and everywhere. It's also entirely feasible that the reason it's dead is because it succumbed to Rose Rosette Disease, which is ALSO rampant in TX, and the wild population of R. multiflora is a reservoir for the disease.

Here is a dead Greenbriar.

Notice how the thorns just emerge smoothly from the stem, with no "baseplate."

So, it does appear to be some sort of rose. Now, I haven't heard of Rosa multiflora down here, but why not? Its thorns do look similar... Or how about Cherokee Rose (Rosa laevigata)?

Or what about a native climbing rose?

And thorns and Poison Ivy...welcome to Texas, lol! Actually, there didn't use to be so much Poison Ivy here. But, after the settlers logged and bulldozed all the forests...they created vastly more fragments and forest edges...which is the ideal habitat for Poison Ivy. :(
