Here is what I would do. For new sod, I would not count on the subsurface drip to reach the roots of sod sitting above the soil. I would water from the top for the first 2 weeks until the roots from the sod knit into the soil below. Oh, first I would walk on every square inch of the new sod to ensure it is pressed against the soil. You need good sod to soil contact, because roots will not grow through the air looking for water. Ok, back to new sod watering: water daily, 3x per day, for 5 to 15 minutes continuing for 2 weeks until the roots connect to the soil. You can tell it's connected by trying to lift the sod up. Then, once the sod is stuck to the ground, I would start with the drip once per day for a full hour, and see how that goes. If the soil feels squishy, that's waaaaay too much water, and you should back off on the frequency. If it seems too wet, then back off on the frequency, not the duration. Once the roots are established, you should be watering once per week in the hottest heat of summer even if you live in Phoenix. Which makes me ask, where do you live and what kind of sod are we talking about?

If the grass ever seems to be drying out, I would return immediately to watering from above to see if that corrects the drying. It could be the roots are not yet deep enough to reach the drip water level.

I'm also curious about how the soil was prepared for the irrigation system. Did they rototill it first, or trench it in, or what?
