what is this room missing?

This is my living room. I like it but it doesn’t feel like it has much “personality”. My daughter’s friend said my house looks like an ikea catalog lol! My style is transitional, non-cluttered, and neutral with pops of colour. I think the colour is what we are missing?

The tv is too high but we will live with it because a) it’s not the main tv watching area and b) it’s the only place the tv will fit in the room.

I think I need a different console table behind the couch. This one looked better before DH stuck the cat tree there and now it looks crowded.

Thank you!

I really like the wood on your ceiling. The proportion and shape of your coffee and end tables aren’t right. I’d add a large square coffee table that reflects your ceiling.

I like the "C" tables; great for snacks, drinks or using your devices! I do think you could improve on the coffee table, but with the convenience of "C" tables you may not need one.. Did you ever consider corner mounting TV left of the window? I have one about that size corner mounted and I really like it. That would mean turning the sofa to face the window with its back to the stairwell. Maybe the console could go in front of the window with the chair angled to the right of it. Then you could use art above the mantel. It is amazing how much personality is wiped out by overhead lighting, and I note you have no accent or task lighting. Can you add LED's to the ladder shelves? What about attaching some LED strips to the back side of the shelves where they add a glow to the walls?

Deco thanks for the suggestion. I had not ever contemplated reversing the room!

DH mostly just uses that TV to have sports on in the background while we are puttering around the kitchen and dining room. I’ll have to see if he is game to try that, if it means losing the ability to see the TV through the rest of the main floor. It wouldn’t bother me one bit!

I had table lamps in our old house but those side tables were too big for this space - I recently replaced them with the c tables and the lamps were not good. I’ll see what I can do with with a floor lamp somewhere or led strips on the shelves. Another great idea.

It's a lovely, non-cluttered room. The checkered pillow is the wrong style for the rest of the room. You could use a few more pops of color - try pillows and a throw that pull out the mustard color in the rug. I like Lau Rie's coffee table. It fills up empty space and adds wood to contrast with your other metal and glass tables. I would change out the red item on the coffee table as there is no other red in the room. Once you have a larger coffee table, add a large flower arrangement or plant, some candles, and a sculptural object (bowl, statue, something a bit quirky) to add personality.

Yep, you're missing lamps. Probably floor lamps at this point.

The problem I see, is you have all straight lines in the room. I suggest sliding the sectional forward but away from the walls. Then get a round sea grass tray for your round coffee table. Get a textured wall hanging to soften the look with more texture. Add textured pillows in off whites with some black for accents. Add wall mounted swing lamp for sectional area. Here is mock up for you. I used ivory, black and textured items plus some greenery. That view is amazing and bring some of that green into this room will be great.

    Thanks again!

I just want to say I love the rug! :-) I have to agree the pillows don't work and I am torn about the coffee table. I like the one you have, but the one Lau Rie proposed is nice too.

You have a lovely room! Does the cat tree have to live in that space?

I would use less on your console table. There is a lot going on there.

The coffee table looks like it is just floating in space. Perhaps you can add a large basket or something to the bottom glass shelf of the coffee table and add some cool large books to the top. It just needs something to anchor it.

I am huge fan of lamps. If there is anyway you can get some table lamps and a floor lamp in your space, I would do that.

I agree with the others about the pillows.

I must sound so harsh! I do not mean to. Your living room is truly beautiful. I just think some tweaks would help.

Yes the cats need to love there! If I remove the cat tree they will spend their time sleeping and scratching on the couch (I have 3 :-) )

The glass table doesn’t have a bottom shelf but I’ll try the sea grass basket idea to see if that helps anchor it. If not I’ll try a square wood table as also suggested.

I’ll definitely figure out lamps. Can’t do table lamps on the c tables but will try a floor lamp or a wall mounted lamp.

Agree with only needing a few adjustments. Can the cat tree go by the window, as console will look much better centered (your cat will enjoy it there lol.) I’d rethink the accessories, so console feels less busy (already a lot of small items on shelves next to fireplace) and add a lamp as well.

I’d also remove both end tables; they are not large enough to be practical and only busy up the room. Accessorize the coffee table to give it some weight and add a few geometric cushions that tie into rug.

I agree that it's a lovely room, and you've gotten some great suggestions. It's very nice as is but since you're asking to make changes: I'll add that you need something old. When everything is new, rooms can feel like they're lacking personality/soul. Maybe a vintage coffee table, or replace that chair with a cool aged leather chair, replace one of the C tables with something like a tree stump or vintage side table. Books also add a layer of personality. And I see that you have some greenery on the console table but maybe bring a plant to the TV side of the room--can you put one of the small pots on the mantel? I've heard designers say that every space needs something old and something living/organic (geodes, stone, shells, plants, etc.). You might also consider larger, squishier pillows.

This room has large pillows, a mix of textures (sheepskin, wool, leather, stone, brick, wood, metal), plant, vintage art and coordinating (but not matching) tables.

Mix of textures, big squishy pillows, organic stone and florals, old statue, books. The side tables match but there's a different coffee table. And there are at least three sources of light here--lamp, sconces, cans.

    I agree with previous comments.

    • I would start with pillows as those are the least expensive. Use colors that are in the rug (example in picture below -- all from Pottery Barn)
    • A floor lamp where the cat climber is (I like lamp in the 2nd picture below -- it is part of Athena Calderone's collection with C&B)
    • A wood coffee table as others suggested - I like the Anthropologie coffee table in the picture below
    • I would also change the sofa table - shown in the attached picture is the Stax console from CB2 (currently on sale)
    • Not loving the c tables; if they are something that you do not really move around, I would replace with something more structural

I agree with above, that bringing some of the warmth of the wood bookcases and ceiling to behind the sofa will help balance the room. If you are not ready to replace coffee table, then the seagrass basket is a great idea. I have a large plug-in long arm/hanging sconce over the chaise part of my sofa (we don't have overhead lighting so it gives the illusion)-- something like that would work (was posted upthread- but mine has a drum shade vs metal- I'm sure there are many choices). And then add more greenery (bring the outdoors in!). I do think it's a nice clean space though.

Hi everyone. I’ve been trying to do whatever I can before buying new furniture :-)

    I bought:

    • new pillows
    • round rattan tray for the coffee table
    • large plant beside the window

The cat tree is staying where it is. We tried it in front of the window before buying the plan and it really blocked our nice view.

Next up is styling the console to see if we can make it work better before spending money on new. I am debating one of the two lamps I’ve included below. They would bring some better lighting in. I am also considering adding a light to the wall or a floor lamp but starting with the console.

We can’t move the couch any further away from the wall- the TV is mounted too high as it is so we don’t want to be closer (and moving the TV was a nonstarter for my husband).

Here is the interim progress and the 2 lamps I am considering.

So, you haven't tried rearranging the furniture?

Pour éviter l'effet masse et sombre du canapé, mettez beaucoup plus de coussins avec des couleurs et motifs qui rappellent ceux du tapis.

Hi deco- my husband doesn’t want to move the TV as he wants into be able to view it from the adjoining kitchen. So we have not tried rearranging the furniture since the other searing arrangements wouldn’t allow for TV viewing from the couch. (Unless I misunderstood!) thanks again for your help!

It's missing a photo of your kitties. If your daughter's friend is a teenager believe them.
