I don’t think metal would work as a fire barrier in that space; wouldn’t it heat up? Not an expert!!! You need a plan for the whole room before picking the materials. Is it a cabin in the woods, a northern lake house? Do you have a style you prefer? River rock can be a nice dark gray, or you can paint brick with fire rated masonry paint. Does he want something sleek and modern?

It is in a rural location in Montana. Thank he whole house is getting redone. Rustic modern, easy maintenance for a bachelor. There is an abundance of river rock available just trying to think of products that are more modern. Will have wood style luxury vinyl. Warm natural leather couches. Wants some dark tone paints because very high ceilings.

Fire barrier? i would look to see what that stove is and what the required clearances to combustibles are. Combustion clearances go beyond just what covers the wall. Is there some sort of heat shield on the pipe? Has the stove been inspected by a professional?
