Kitchen Layout Suggestions

We are looking for input on a kitchen layout for our daughter’s home. This was previously two rooms, kitchen and dining room. The wall in between is being removed. The corners in the wall next to the 61 1/8” bay window are also being pushed out. I have attached a rough sketch of where the appliances were previously. Due to the outside of the house on the backyard side being stone, any changes to the floor to ceiling bow window in dining area or kitchen door are not being considered. Right now it is just the two of them but they plan to do a fair amount of large family entertaining. The doorways to the family room and living room lead to generously sized rooms that have accommodated the large family gatherings in the past where they set up tables so that’s why they would like to keep those two doorways. This home was her husband’s grandparent’s home and the home where her father-in-law and his brothers grew up. 😀
They would like:

  1. an island with the sink and dishwasher in it if possible. The plumbing runs under the kitchen/dining area so it is easy to accommodate this from that perspective.
  2. a table in the open area near the floor to ceiling window
  3. a full length counter with wall and base cabinets along the 11’2” wall

The wall on the den side has already been pushed back eliminating the powder room to accommodate a full depth fridge (already purchased) and pantry so that’s why we have placed those there. It is a ranch home with a hall bath and master bath so the powder room there is not necessary.

The stove is already purchased and is 30” free standing.

I am sorry to say but you came here too late for some of this stuff. You do not space for an island it is never good to remove a bathroom. You only gain about 10% more space in a full size fridge and they take up so much space depth wise. Now you need a really good independant KD to get all the things needed into a space that really did not improve function

Thank you. The changes were already done or started before they had access to the house so, good or bad, this space is what they have to work with.

I agree that you should hire a really good Kitchen Designer who can help you make the most of this space and cost effectively. If you haven't done that already, here are a few things you might consider before you hire one.

    1) KEEP the Powder Room

    2) If possible move door to backyard down towards Bow window and consider shrinking it. If you do this you could gain at least 2ft in "main" part of kitchen. That's 2ft of valuable counter space.

    3) Move fridge to the wall where the current cooktop/wall ovens are.

    4) Consider putting range/cooktop on wall that backs up to current powder room. This gives you nice landing space on either side of range/cooktop. You will incure extra cost for venting through roof so it might not be an option.

    5) Use long wall across from Bow window for pantry storage and possibly a coffee bar area. You could have shallow storage built on sides with a slight bump out for deeper storage in middle. This would add some interest and not just a straight wall of cabinets.

    6) Enlarge doorway to family room

    7) Enlarge doorway to living room. If you use the idea above (shallow storage on either side of builtin pantry) you'd have room to enlarge the opening towards the right a bit more.

I agree that removing the powder room given there is another hall bath option is good as it allows you more available floor space within the kitchen. You could consider removing the door to the backyard and putting your stove on that wall, keep the sink where it is and your fridge/pantry recessed into the powder room space. The bow window could be replaced with a slider for access to the backyard. Agree with the poster above that putting a coffee bar with two pantry's on either side would look more formal for a dining area and you may be able to squeeze in a narrow (2 feet wide) Island/maybe worktable, if there is room to leave at least 3 feet on all sides between your cabinetry. If you have more light coming in from the backyard side of this space you could consider this configuration below.

Thank you! Great idea, the contractor and my husband did discuss taking out the kitchen door and putting sliders where the bow window is however since the outside of the house is all stone on that side that is a bigger job than can be done with the budget right now.
