Of course it depends on your budget, but to me that sounds like a good price to get rid of something that no one thinks is desirable, and if you ever have to patch again it would be easier.

If, they dont bother you, in the basement, then I probably wouldnt go through the expense. I prefer smooth ceilings, but, I dont mind the textured ones either, as long as they are not that old pop corn texture.

What type of texture do you have on the ceiling? Is it popcorn?

Show us pictures? It completely depends on how much you spend time in your basement and how much you think you will really notice that ceiling. Some textures don't bother me enough to want to remove them from a really casual space like a basement (for example: knockdown). But if it was popcorn or a bizarre swirly plaster, I'd personally want it gone.

It depends on the texture, use a drywall taping knife and give a few scrapes in the corner and see if it can be removed with ease.

My sister-in-law just moved into a new house with textured ceilings, gave her a drywall sander with a vac attachment a few hours it was to an original smooth surface.

Some textured finishes require different approaches, some could be very messy and some don't pay to bother, and in cases like that if they really want to get rid of them they just scrape the texture and use 1/4" drywall over it.

The room already looks very nice. I would leave it. Orange peel is actually very popular for both ceilings and walls in some areas.

Do you actually use your basement space? If you use it often then I would say have the textured ceiling removed.
