what would this stuff be?

I have a lot of these plants, both in the ground and in pots. I always thought it was some kind of mahonia, but some more precise ID would be helpful. The plants are more or less rounded, a few feet across, with stems radiating from a central root. That is, there is no central stem. They suffer some in the high heat of the summer, but otherwise look pretty good. I don't think I've ever noticed flowers or berries. Now true mahonia does like acid soil, and mine is alkaline, so that may be a stressor. Also, they're mostly in the shade, and that doesn't help.
