I think you want the newer, smaller 4" cans. Place them above your countertops so that the light shines where you work. If they're behind you, your body will create a shadow. I don't think you need any cans in the center since you have the nice pendants. ETA: actually, you may want one right over your sink since the pendants look like they won't direct light right there.

Our design firm didn't put one over the range since the hood has a light built in; however, I wish I had one there. The light in my hood is a blue color that I hate and don't like to use.

The ones on the right were placed nonsensically -- like their mates, they should have been lined up with the door/walkway.

i agree that all of these recessed lights are mainly providing ambient light, so I hope you have under-cabinet lights to light your work spaces (from in front of you rather than over your shoulder).

BLUE cans - 3 along the ref wall centered on each cabinet (unique decision - I would align the counter light with the ref and oven light since the counter does not appear to be prep), move closer within 12" to cabinet face, not centered along circulation path. 2 along cooktop wall centered on each cabinet, move closer to edge of counter.

GREEN cans - optional over sink (if say do not want to use pendants constantly). Optional over hood (creates hot spot on hood, but amount of light hood insert provides may be insufficient).
