Hosta comparison not working

last modified: 3 years ago

Pieter, I'm trying to use the hosta comparison utility and it doesn't seem to work. I was trying to compare H. Fire and Ice and H. Loyalist. Both sides end in the G's, so couldn't get to Loyalist. Maybe I just didn't understand how to use it. I have used it several times with no problems.

Also, like when I tried to email Don Rawson, I couldn't email you directly from that site. If you are not using gmail (I understand most people use gmail.), the forwarding utility doesn't work. Given I'm a "fall chicken", I'm still using my old yahoo address.

A while ago I added this new site address Compare HostaIs this the one you used? It worked fine a minute ago.

p.s. It did take a bit longer to load than usual. It must be all the new beauties Pieter is adding.

Pieter you posted a fabulous new intro with a thin red edge and now I can't find the post or remember the name.

    Ladies,

Barbara, the FULL routine works fine, you likely used the one for the variegated ones and that one as well as all the others with a narrower selection, i.e. blue, green, streaked etc. are all works in progress and now that I'm spending a lot more time inside I've started to work on them again. It'll be some time before it's all been sorted, it's a slow and tedious process. For some time to come you're best off to use the very first link you see on the landing page, the one I linked. You may want to bookmark that link.

Laurie, indeed I posted something about 'Aquamarine Mermaid', post was deleted by the looks of it...

Thanks, I guess I didn't read the whole post. I used the link on the hosta library.

Hey pieter, I am having trouble with the comparison. I can get to it fine from the bookmark I made, but I don’t know how to land my cursor so I can type the first letters of the hosta rather than scroll. Someone mentioned this was possible in another post. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Debra,

It's not hard: just click on the list box arrow so the list drops down and away you go.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, I'll include instructions on the landing page on how to do it!

A tip to help you navigate the drop-down list faster. If you take a look at the image below you will see the drop down list on the right hand side has a high-lighted name and once you see that you can simply type the first few letters of the name of the variety you're after and the list will pop-up what you want to see. If you keep typing at a normal pace and complete most of the unique first letters of the name it'll take right there. If you want to go to say 'Halcyon' you type in the first 3 letters in sequence and you're there, if you go too slow, particularly if the name is more than just one word, you may well end up where you didn't expect to go. Just start again with the first 2 or 3 letters and once you're closer to the name you can use your up/down arrows on your keyboard to navigate to your desired name.

OK, everything works fine! My problem was I was trying to do the comparison on my Ipad. Doesn't work there but no problems on my desktop. Maybe that tip will help anyone else trying to do the comparision on a handheld device.

Debra and Doug, sorry to hear of your iPad issues. Not an Apple fan boy so I can't help you there but just for fun I tried it on my Android phone and it's quite usable. Not like what you see on a desktop but it works, not sure if it works the same on an Android tablet but I suspect it will. I have no doubt the Apple issue is related to the age of the underlying Java routine. Here's what it's like on my phone:

ios on ipad and iphone doesnt support java or flash for security reasons.

i have never had a virus so its worth it.

i use applescript alot. even that has been limited internally with the latest security improvements. but it is super helpful on osx for application tasks.

nice tool you have created. cuts down on some of the id traffic.

Doug, I cannot take credit for creating the routine, that was done by Hugo Philips originally. He used to run it on his website but hasn't for a long time now and now I'm running and maintaining it on my personal website for I don't recall how long now, well over 10 years. The maintenance is time consuming as it is all done by hand, with all the steps that are needed I'm lucky to effectively add 30 names an hour. I get an update list with all the new additions from Carol Brashear whenever she and Bill have done a major batch of additions to the HL, usually once a year. I'm in the middle of working my way through that right now.
