What will you do if you discover that the duct extends further into the wall than the thickness of the baseboard molding? You may find that the duct is deeper and the pictured baseboard register won't completely cover the duct.

Everbilt does offer deeper baseboard registers:

Honestly hadnt considered that possibility.

Perhaps you can carefully remove the entire piece of baseboard to ascertain what's going on behind it.

Floor registers will have a different duct boot setup than Baseboard registers and be spaced farther out in the floor (obviously). If the wall is the original wall, you may actually have an original baseboard duct they jerry-rigged to a 2 1/4" floor register when they did the wainscot. Agree remove the base to see what's going on.

Based on the photo, I think the existing floor duct and cover were partially covered by the wainscot and baseboard when they were added. You can see the that the baseboard has been trimmed where it sits over the now-too-deep register cover.

@wdccruise yes obvious the base was added over it, but if a floor style register originally existed that would mean the floor register was positioned flush up against the wall, which wouldn't happen, especially since there would still have been a base along the wall. They may not have wanted an original baseboard style register sticking up over their new wainscot.

But, if the OP wants to return here after removing the base we get to see this DIY hackjob conclusion . . .

Kelly, if this is a large room like a Living, then you probably need the full amount of air coming from the vent. You could probably just stick the new baseboard style register there, but it looks like the floor will be blocking a lot of the air. And how much air is being blocked by the baseboard and wainscot too. If it is a 2 1/4" register, not so much, but if they built a wall over a 4x10 register like wdcruise postulated, that would be a lot of air not being delivered. Hopefully, the duct (meaning size/position) is set up for a baseboard register and you can just cut the baseboard and wainscot to mount your new register against the drywall/plaster.

Finally got the time to attack this. Floor vent was bent to fit closer to the wall. Cut away baseboard and bottom of wainscot but it isis still stuck on something
