Beige, beige, and more beige. I'd keep the sofas and chairs, but change out the rug for something more colorful. Then get throw pillows for the sofa that pick up the colors in the new rug. So now the TV is gone that is good. I wpuld start by getting a more colorful modern rug , then use colors from the rug for pillows on the sofa with more texture than pattern. Find a pice of art you love I haunt galleries to see what I love . We have collected original art for quite a long time and would never buy art to work in my space but I have often done my space to work with the art. As for the FP how about just apinting the wll jut out where the fire box is a color from the new rug .I might try those soafs facing eahother and the cahirs on the large wall under the new art . Make sure that the art you choose is large and hung so that the center is at 60-65 " from the floor I really do not like bookcases usually in a LR and I always ask what you have tha deserves display . What I find is usually just a binch of stuff to fill the shelves. I like the idea of the tree but it needs to be real. Could you maybe post a picture of the rest of the space . I like what I see of this space

Moving TV will be great - thinking that it would be fine lower on wall to right of FP & with a narrow width console under it. Then great art over FP. I think that’s what’s needed is art for color & warmth. Love the rug - play up that bit of rust accent color as you are doing with pillows & art by window. Need art over sofa too so maybe the 3 small pieces need to move. Killer view & like the swivel chairs & wood table. I’d like a drape for window to soften & warm up room. Same color as walls, mounted at ceiling height & all stacked back completely off window at left when open - will cover the wall where 3 arts are. Sofa - small thing but please turn the seat cushion so zipper seen on long end that is pointing towards FP is placed at inside end & hidden. Bolsters added will be good. Tree in far corner good too. Need a table in front of couch. No suggestions for painting / tiling FP. Does it work?

ETA can’t tell if there’s enough room but a lamp behind couch & at corner would be good. Turn off the overhead pot light that will make anyone sitting in corner feel like being interrogated! ☺️ A lamp there will make it a great place to lounge & read.

I suggest you go for more of a look like this with the sofas, and place the two swivel chairs to face the fireplace with a gallery wall behind them to counter balace the fireplace wall Replace the tall table between the chairs with something a tad lower. A ceramic garden stool in your chosen accent color or metal could be nice. Add a sculpture to the chimney breast, and you might want to reduce the black hole of a surround and firebox if you redo that wall. A live fig by he fireplace is a good idea. Get ceiling tracks for sheers to the floor, completely covering the wall and stacking back on that left side where the three pictures are now. The size of your rug is great, but you could do with a more colorful one. Gold or brass could be good bling with the colors you already have, and you could use some metals. After all the fabrics and textiles are in place, consider choosing a fresh paint color that works with the new upholstery, drapes and rug. Then comes art placement.

@johnneykim What a darling of a doggie!! Love how much light comes through those windows. The rug size in kitchen isn't bad - just needs to be centered in width. Since you're replacing it, would be nice if were the same tones as LR rug & maybe you're adding one at entry too? My suggestion of lamp at couch corner - seeing the console sofa table there - just add a lamp to it. Not too tall but tall enough to shed light on a book in hand when sitting in that corner.

P.S. Looking at windows again & thinking of plan to move TV. If you'd like it to stay in LR, I'll second my initial thought of moving to wall at right of FP. Looks like the slight indent of that wall from FP would be perfect for limiting glare from windows on TV screen.

You’ve gotten excellent ideas from Beverly and Sabrina and decoenthusiast. Start with a new rug to get the addition of color. Consider a similarly colored one for a kitchen runner (the current runner is too traditional) and then start a pillow search. I love Beverly’s idea to darken the fireplace wall.

I am sorry the couch(es) are uncomfortable because they’re stunning. They make a huge design statement.

I’ll be the outlier here. I really like the LR rug - it’s the pattern that grabs me,Sort of Arts & Crafts but simple & I think the design adds texture. I think it’s a great contrast with floor. I also like Beverly’s suggestion of painting the FP wall. I would add the art, add the sofa bolster pillows & a coffee table. I’d also prefer a console over shelving to right of FP & either the TV or more smaller art there - maybe the 3 pieces that are by window now & then a sculptural piece on FP

My hand-me-down sofa had thick cardboard placed beneath cushions - are yours attached? if not, there are stiff materials to try.

No changing it that some have grey/black preferences, and others prefer beige/khaki/tan-- I don't mind your room's neutrals.

Are the chairs gold, or more in lemon--grass tinge?

You all are unbelievable helpful! Love the mock ups — so helpful to see how the room could be different. I am a little bummed by the consensus about the rug — it is new, but I see your points. Thanks KW for your support. :) The idea was to pick up the colors in the furniture and to contrast with the floor, as KW said. I may need to live with it for now. I was going to bring in more color and texture with pillows/bolsters, potentially painting or tiling the FP, and lamps. Everdebz, the chairs actually pick up a yellow/green that is in the fabric of the couch — the camera doesn’t necessarily pick it up, but they go well with the couch and the rug. The couch depth is more the problem for comfort, rather than the feel of the cushions.
I am so grateful for these ideas and opinions! You have given me such great direction — I will definitely post the finished room!

Just want to,show you how changing to an MCM rug will highlight the great lines of your couch. You don’t need to do this now, but just giving you ideas help to see outside the box. Most of us cannot envision changes to our own homes.

@johnneykim Ok - I see the difference in look with the rugs @RedRyder shows but - I don’t like any of them in your space - or mine for that matter. I see you’ve had another vote for liking your current rug. A thought - you could use the suggestions for a stonger patterned rug when choosing a new kitchen & possibly entry hall rug - just coordinate the colors with ”our” beautiful LR rug. The stronger colored & more patterned rugs would be more forgiving in the high traffic areas. Happy you’re leaving the rug - work on adding the other things with color - drapes, wall art etc & my bet is you’ll like your rug even more! BTW, I do consider that rug a piece of art too - that’s why I love it!

This is what makes decorating so much fun & personal. For me, I like spaces that are calm & soothing, with focal points, but not with anything that draws TOO much attention to itself. Totally respect & appreciate other preferences—- this just me - I like harmony without any piece of the puzzle yelling much louder than the others — or for that matter too many things yelling! If you know what I mean :). I love other looks & styles, but lean quieter in my own space. My thanks to everyone. You have really helped tremendously!

You mention couch depth, and not sure which way you mean.

Our stiff cardboard kept us from sinking too far down - that's as uncomfortable as bad cushions I guess.

If you cannot relocate the rug to say the bedroom, then keep it and make your decisions using it.

It sets a soft mood for the room so your art and material suggestions should take their cue from the rug and its colors. Maybe consider painting the walls around the fireplace in khaki keeping the black surround.

Just don't add accessories to make the room too 'sweet'.

@everdebz Re: your question about the couch — it is too deep from front to back, so your back is not supported. We’ll solve that problem with bolster pillows. Love your comment about not making the room too “sweet”. I do want to keep it more minimalist and modern.

I find it somewhat distressing that all the comments urge you to buy new products, whereas you stated that you specifically bought the rug because of how it was made and that you are using a gifted couch.

Your existing rug is fine - and if you like it, definitely keep it.

Your current rug can work - but I would say not in combination with the existing floral throw pillows. So consider instead substituting a couple of pillows with texture - such as velvet.

No, you don’t have to change the rug. My post was to show a completely different MCM vibe and if it reinforces your love of your existing rug, then I’m glad.

I think the deep orange in your rug could be the right color for bolster pillows. I know what you mean by a too deep couch. I’m 5’2” and many couches are too deep for me. Good pillows are critical here.

Hello all — Just sending a late update. We DID decide to change the rug, and it took many months to arrive. The old one got a new home in a bedroom and fits the room better. This one needs a different rug pad (you’ll see the old one bunched at the end). Per your suggestions, I got a lower table for under the window. Still planning ceiling-hung sheers (also a reader suggestion) hung to the left of the window, and we need art. We’ve tried different pillows and nothing seems to work well…yet. I will post the finished product, whenever we get there!

I love that rug with the new coffee & side tables! I see that I had voted to keep original but have to say that this new one adds a great interest to your space. A win that you can use the original rug in another room. The lines of the 3 arts stacked on wall above sofa play well with rug too.

Nice rug! It definitely brightens up the room. The whole seating arrangement looks cohesive and inviting.

If you’re up to it, add one rust pillow to the couch. That is a good color to highlight.
