composting in containers?

I have heard of people growing fruit trees in containers who simply add fruit & vegetable scraps to their containers several times a year and cover them with a layer of soil. One lady says that's the only thing she does, and uses no other fertilizer at all, and her trees are thriving.

Has anyone tried this? What are your thoughts?

One of my concerns with this method is that the ant population is out of control here, and I'm afraid it the food scraps would attract them and they'd soon infest all of my fruit tree containers. They are already swarming in my compost trenches!
