Were are you located? In a place that lets you leave the pots out all year long?

It is not anything I would ever recommend! If growing long term in containers, the "soil" or planting media is the most important element for the long term health of your trees. Anything that is very organic - material that will decompose or breakdown in time - will begin to compact and breakdown into minute particles that will impede proper drainage and aeration. The perched water table (PWT) will climb and you will run the very real risk of root rots. And food scraps or compost are not a very efficient means of fertilizations either. It really doesn't make a difference if these are indoor or outdoor plants.......or travel back and forth as weather permits. The concept does not alter :-)

I'd suggest reading these links carefully to gain a proper understanding of how best to grow any plants - and especially permanent or long term plants - in containers.

That whole 'growing in garbage' thing would be mightily fraught with problems. I can see the clouds of fungus gnats swarming in an orgiastic frenzy just above the heads of the coons, 'possums, skunks, rats, and other assorted diners as they fight for their place at the table of scraps spilled from pots overturned in the gloaming of the day.
