Black doors and windows

Hi everyone - we are building a custom home - modern French chateau. Our windows are aluminum wood clad ( black on the outside and we painted the wood cladding black on the inside using a painters manufacture grade black paint. For the interior doors, i was thinking of using benjamin moore black onyx paint. It is a warm black with neutral undertones so appears softer. Our painter said that we should use the same black paint we
used for the windows. What do you think? Will it look it weird?

I would listen to your painter and use the same black, so it all blends together. Two different blacks will just not look right.

The outside and inside would never be together so I would go for the one you want, it will be beautiful.

If you love black great, but consider the black window trend carefully.

Black windows with a white exterior and interior is the hottest trend going at the moment, but are they right for your new build? Here’s what you need to know before you choose black windows for your home.

The easy answer is to do everything the same, but it really depends on what else you are doing in the space.

If the doors and windows are similar and in close proximity I would want them to be identical. This would look odd if the door was a different color black than the windows.

Here is a door (granted it is a barn door) that is much softer than the black rail. It looks intentional, not like someone tried to match the door to the rail and failed.

If I owned this kitchen I may not want a black door. . .

There isn't even a rule that states you have to paint all the interior doors the same color.

Sometimes with black doors it looks better to have some black and some white. Too many black doors can create a heavy look.

Are you doing black trim, white trim and colored walls or white trim with white walls or wood trim?

Do you want the doors black on both sides? Sometimes you may want the doors to be black in the main area of the home, but it may feel harsh in a bedroom to have the interior of the door black.

I love this trim on these black windows. This look could be paired with black or wood doors.

@jenniferhogan Thank you so much for all of the photos...you've given me a lot to think about. We are painting the walls and trim BM Silver Satin, trim will be a satin finish. We don't have a lot of doors. But probably safer to go with the same color as windows

I’m staring at a wall in my living room, black door, two black windows, a black art easel (actually it might be ORB) two paintings with black frames, a black and white buffalo check window covering and none of those were intentionally perfectly matched and yet they all read as black. If anything the varying blackness or shine or texture adds depth.

Are you dead set on Silver Satin?

Not saying you are wrong, if it was chosen because it works with the colors you love, but want to make sure that you understand how limiting this color can be and that the gray trend is coming to an end and you may box yourself into a choice that is difficult to design around.

Silver Satin is a white that is a very light shade of violet gray. I love purple, wine red and teal and have used violet gray and taupe (Between violet gray and pink beige) on my walls. It is a perfect backdrop for the art and things I own that are purple, purple reds, but if these are not the colors you love you may be stuck buying things for your home that you don't truly love.

@jenniferhogan - the paint samples seemed to work really well on the walls. The purple hue doesn't seem to present itself much at all during the day time and of course is non existent in the evening.....also works very well with our furniture compares to other samples. If ever an issue in the future we can always change the color
