one trick in a situation like this is to add PRICE after the plant name.. and see who is willing to sell it ..

it appears some of the nurseries are UK based.. are you?

I love Epimediums, nothing matches their ability to grow in dry shade. I find them bulletproof. I've been buying my Epimediums from this company....

    Garden Visions Epicedium

The original owner of this company did some discovery and introduction of epimediums in their native areas. China mostly maybe?

Yes, it's too late in the season, but I'm sure you can place an order in the spring. We had overnight temps of 22F last night. I'd hate to think of an order for me being in transit at that point.

I did take a look at her site to see what she had that is cold tolerant. At the top of the home page, is a tab for Find plants/By growth & habit/Cold tolerant. I see this plant listed - she lists this, is this the plant you are looking for?

    Epimedium macrosepalum

    Good luck!

@prairiemoon2 z6b MA, you are a better "man" than I as slowly but surely the 3 or 4 or more I planted a several years ago are no more :(. I had no success getting epimediums to thrive in our garden :(.

Rouge, I'm so surprised to hear that. I wonder if we have very different conditions? They have been plant and ignore plants for as long as I've been growing them. The first one I bought was in 1997 and I've divided them and increased them a couple of times. Even during last summer's drought they were much less effected than other plants.

I've been very relieved because I have a lot of dry shade under Maples that I had tried a few things that didn't work before I tried them, even native plants like the native tiarellas and woodland phloxes that won't grow for me. I guess we all have a few plants that won't grow for us, it's a mystery. You seem to grow a lot of plants successfully, your garden seems so vigorous and well cared for.

I know that person no longer ships herself but she gives a list of other US mail order sources for Epimediums. Scroll down her pages for the link or click Sources of Mail Order Epimediums - Garden Vision Epimediums That's why I said the site might give you some leads.

I agree. It is a bit weird as these plants are known to be 'bullet proof'. (And I can tell you that it isn't the only variety of perennial that I can't "whisper sweet nothings to" and get a positive response :))

Rouge, I think plants are so specific sometimes for what they will respond to. When I have a plant that doesn't respond, I usually try moving it to a different location a couple of times before I give up on it. Sometimes that makes a difference. And I will ignore the growing requirements and just move them into different light conditions than they were growing in. I haven't had to do that with Epimediums but I have noticed that those plants that grow in more sun seem to be more vigorous. I have a couple that are planted at the base of a mature Maple in a bed of vinca and they come back every year, but they don't really keep getting larger. But I think that location is so challenging that it's amazing they keep coming back at all and they bloom! I have some up against the garage that are facing north and they seem a little leggy to me. At one point, I realized that I always buy the clumpers and I was wanting more spread, so I started buying a few of the spreaders and they do spread more. I meant to add more of those and just forgot to.
