Take some time to observe the sunlight the area is receiving. Many succulents do well in partial shade. If it gets direct sun for several hours in the middle of the day, you will need to get plants that take full sun. Cruise any independent garden centers in the area and see what they have that looks good to you, ask there about any details you need to know.

If this area is facing directly east, about half of it - the north side - will get sun in afternoon as sun moves around to south. it will also receive more sun in spring & especially summer as sun sits higher in the sky. How wide is the space? Will you be placing seating furniture in it? Maybe add pavers to create a sollid surface for the seating & tables? Would a wall mounted retractable type awning increase ability to sit outside at different times of day? Wall mounted / fence mounted outdoor art would add interest in addition to the planters you want. I’d focus on planning seating before any placement of plants & for on the ground plants I’d use huge colorful pots & definitely more than one tree - a palm type probably - which would add a nice vertical element..
