Looking for sconces

One of our hall baths in Maine needs sconces. It was wired for a single sconce on either side of the mirror, in 2014, until I found sconces I like.

Fast forward 9 years. We have ceiling lights but have been using a floor lamp. In an odd way I like the quirkiness and it works fine but I think it is time.

I really wish I could find something light green, jadeite ideally. The only things I've come across are either modern, not for a bathroom, or too large or too dark or not in pairs. Could I use fabric shades or is that not enough light?

Here is the bathroom as a reminder. One note: the mirror will be switched out for my "luggage medicine cabinet" shown below, when we convert the maid's room to my "pantry annex". They have similar dimensions but just an aesthetic fyi.

Hard to see wallpaper, so this is a close up

"New" med cab will replace mirror though not right away

Darnit, I have a jadeite sconce in one of our beach bathrooms but it doesn’t look like Rejuvenation carries it any more.

    Sweet bathroom.

    Or, you know, maybe these.

But I really like the ones Localeater found.

    Sue, are you channeling VEB?
The Anthropologie ones totally fit the brief, maybe I should try them. I’m not sure about silver w green

Local I saw those … not sure if it’s one pattern too many?

I did think they might be a bit too much, but decide I think they work. Albeit I think they work with the existing mirror. The suitcase mirror would throw it off I think. Are you sure you want to move it there? The room is sweet and vintage now, and I think the suitcase mirror is more bohemian.

I dont think I am a fan of the green being in the glass, I think it might make everyone look sickly.

I like both the Etsy and Anthro suggestions better than this, but just to throw more ideas out there … schoolhouse style:

I think I will have to try it there. You are right that it certainly implicates the choice of light. I don't know where else to move it to though, and I also have always hated the white wicker mirror that is there (and hung to high).

I think the luggage med cab might work now that the armoire is there; i see it as repeating similar colors. I am going to see if I can get a better picture for mockup purposes.

Jinx, We have that type, in white, our dressing room/BA here. Always a classic, not sure if they work flanking a mirror as well as above a mirror?

I'm glad you said you hated the present mirror, because I do think you need something else. Those first sconces are great! I love that towel bar (although we don't use towel bars in our house but I would go for that one in that bathroom).

    last modified: 3 years ago

Yes, it was in our basement bathroom in our first house and I have never liked it. I am not sure why it came with us! It was a place holder than just never got addressed.

We don't have any room for the towel bar anywhere. I do have antique milk glass towel bars on the front of my vanity at home and love them.

Jinx, I did find images of that style flanking a mirror. Not sure if they should face up or down. The junction boxes were placed 6' on center so prob down.

This pair is simpler than the painted ones I posted earlier, same seller . The lines on these work well with the luggage mirror IMO

Then, there’s this green pair. I wish they had shades…

Local, I'm on the same site --- several green porcelain ones to choose from.

I have also found new porcelain sconces, incl. one with shades Definitely thinking porcelain.

KSWL, I would do a bamboo or tortoise or real wicker mirror, but not shell or beach glass. I want to pick up the tones in the armoire. Also, I love this medicine cabinet. It was made to order from a really nice vintage suitcase and I am going to keep using it, just have to think of where if not here.

ETA DH just checked with a magnet and he says they are centered at 66", which is where they should be; 6' is wrong

Standby, now I am wondering if they really did wire where I think they did...

I got these refurbished vintage porcelain sconces online; might have been on eBay, I can no longer remember - I didn’t find shades I liked, but I did find these porcelain bulbs on Etsy, and I like them a lot.

Re - the suitcase mirror - It might suit the period of your bathroom but I don't think it suits your take on the period.

Clearly I am not in the cool crowd because I never heard of a suitcase mirror and had to look again at your photo to see what you were talking about.

I never knew they existed, so I definitely don't think they are over. They are new to me but anyway I think it's lovely.

After you confirm the wiring, you have to decide if that's where you will use the luggage mirror. I think you are smart to acknowledge that using it makes it even more important to tie together the natural tones in the armoire and the luggage mirror, you need a third warm element minimally. One possibility it to replace the shade on the window with natural shade. You could use the embellish it with green ribbon, or the fabric from the existing blind. However, with the luggage mirror you still might need lights with a little more visual weight that the small vintage porcelain ones. It's hard to say, the luggage mirror looks quite dark in the picture compared to the photo of the bathroom, but I am thinking a lot of that is lighting differences in the two shots and in reality it is softer and more mellow.

Anyway, I was thinking about rope, wood, pottery sconces. I have some sweet sconces from Georgetown pottery, the colors would look great in your bath. Kind of like this

I can image a hole drilled in a rectangular platter and that being the back of a wall light.

This has been a fun diversion from looking for my bedroom sconces LOL

I’ve not seen a luggage mirror and did not know you had it made— not dissing your mirror 🙁 but have seen too many tables made of stacked vintage suitcases. It would probably also be easier to find a sconce for a less distinctive mirror., or use plainer sconces not to compete with it.

What do you think about having it wired for an over-the-mirror light, instead of sconces? I think you’d have a lot more fixture choices, and it would fit the style of the room just as well.

    Nice one from Waterworks:

    https://www.waterworks.com/us_en/r-w-atlas-wall-mounted-double-arm-sconce-with-glass-shades-rwlt05

I can picture a charming arching arm style, too, that comes out further from the wall … especially if you use the suitcase.

This is a cutie that could be used either way (would need to change the brass to chrome):

Everyone's doing a fine job helping you source stuff. My only thought about the suitcase mirror is how far it sticks out from the wall. It seems to me that light from the sconces, unless they extend from the wall a bit as well, won't be as illuminating for the person in front of the mirror.

I missed the suitcase light. youre going to have to find lighting that sits proud of the suitcase for appropirate coverage. Otherwise, you’ll end up with accent lights and not functional bathroom task lighting. Do you have the dimensions of the suitcase?

I feel like I am behind on my own thread! My fault for going to brunch; it is such a gorgeous sunny day I actually put down my laptop.

Sorry so long, executive summary in bold ital.

    1. First and foremost, my starting presumption may be wrong. I do not think this wall has any wiring at all. I found old punch lists (c 2014) where i asked for wiring to be put in place on either side of the mirror at 6', then one from them saying, no it should be 66", then one saying "now that the wallpaper is in, you only get one chance to do it right so let's wait until you buy the fixtures." Contra-evidence: there is a switch on the wall to control them, and there was metal detected at 66" just next to the mirror on the right side. Supporting evidence - nothing found on the left, and IIRC unused electrical has to be covered with a plate. Emailed the GC to find out but I think we are starting de novo on wiring which is good because i *might *rather have just one light on top, IDK yet.

    2. I forget how I came across the guy in Brooklyn but he had old suitcases he makes into various items, to order. I love mine and get tons of complements on it and it will need to be relocated from its current spot when I turn the maid's room into a pantry annex, albeit prob not for a few years but I want to plan for it. I don't know if it is "in or out;" 25 years ago I bought old alligator suitcases for decorative purposes. I think I told the story before that one year, DD1 came downstairs packed for French immersion summer carrying them! (yeah, no) I think the vintage suitcases were overdone at one point but I still like them. Also, i wanted to use the luggage medicine cabinet to balance the large armoire on the opposite side of the room which is otherwise the only caramel colored thing in the room. The armoire is newly located to that spot and is working well as a linen closet plus I love it, too. Before anyone goes anti-armoire on me, it's non negotiable.

    Better photos:

    3. As for the issue of the size of the medicine cabinet, i think we are ok. It is 16x26 and the existing mirror is 19x28. The sink is a good size, 26 wide by 22 deep. The medicine cabinet protrudes 8.5" from the wall. I was concerned about that too. However, we use it all the time over a smaller sink and it has never occurred to me that it was "in my face."

Also, in re lighting, I was very surprised to measure one of the sinks in our dressing room (below) and find that that cabinet sticks out 6" inches and the light extends 8". Last night, worried about this issue, i was all set to go with a gooseneck but I think we have some flexibility and it also matters how high, etc. Since I now think we are wiring from scratch, we can accommodate the lighting needs.

MBR dressing room and issue of the profile on a flush mount med cab vis a vis lighting. This set up below has worked perfectly fine. The cabinet is 6" deep and light extends 8". On this basis, if i did one sconce over top, I probably want to have one that extend at least 10.5" from the wall.

    4. In re the suggestion to get rid of the window treatments and use wood blinds to have a third warm element. .. The WT, which are on two windows and also the shower curtain, are my absolute fave part of the room, and the Farrow and Ball wallpaper (hat tip Pal) and floral flooring were all chosen to support it. It is Nina Campbell's Perroquet and it one of my very rare forays into pattern. My girls especially love it. Much as I love wood blinds (see my dressing room above, the MBA, and our LR!), the Perroquet fabric is emphatically not going anywhere. I think I can add a third warm element with a tortoise tissue box or trashcan.

Meanwhile Local, you have me pining for yet a third set of plates, when i need -1 set of plates!

    5. I went down a rabbit hole looking for a different mirror, in case, and found good options if needed ...either if I decided the luggage med cab won't work or just to use in the interim. Looking at caramel-ish wicker, bamboo, rattan, tortoise. I have found several things I like. I am going to try the luggage med cab in situ today and get a feel for it in the space. It is a fairly large bathroom so I don't think it will overwhelm.

1929, i just love those w /the monkeys, altho not w the luggage med cab ofc.

China, I am really liking all the porcelain ones, but I am not sure they will work with the dwell of the med cab. Love all of these

Jinx the first one you showed, the jadeite metal from Etsy, with an opaline glass clamshell, would be great but won't extend enough if i use it overhead, I am not sure how well it would work with two flanking?

    Thank you all!

    mtnrdredux_gw thanked teeda

    Teeda,

I do love skirted inks, but I think I like here I might prefer the airiness of having it open. In the photo above, wanted to increase the visual mass of the sinks in the master dressing room because the room is very big (it was a bed room) and I didn't want our 2 sinks to look lost in it.

    last modified: 3 years ago

I absolutely love the fabric used for the window shade and shower curtain! Beautifully light, airy and perfect. My only thoughts on lighting and a mirror - exactly what you said about extending far enough out if overhead to not get shadows. You have plenty of room on that wall for side sconces. Choosing the right type of shade is important - with any overhead light and I do not like the glare from the bulbs that show. An enclosed shade would solve that.

Meantime, I like the luggage med cab in this bathroom. I think the colors and size work well. I will choose lights that I think can work with it, although in the interim I will have a different mirror there. I have a bid in on one.

Okay, bid accepted. ($101!). I now have a placeholder mirror and can ditch the white wicker monstrosity. This one is a little on the small side, but that only means that when the day comes to replace it with my luggage medicine cabinet, I can easily find a home for this.

1929, I can see the monkeys in a chichi powder room. I think they don't work for this house or room. I do love, love them!

I don’t see it as a medicine cabinet. Understandable. But it is. And It will probably go there, esp. if cant find a better place. This bathroom has a built in med cab on another wall, original. It is pretty empty since this is primarily a hall guest bathroom.

Pal, colors are great but to me, the industrial look may go with the cab but doesn't go with the rest. Would rather tone down the cabinet vibe than add to it if that makes sense.

Pal, I have been searching on Porcelier, and seen most of the inventory. I liked the last one you posted above, but that was when DH and I had a discussion about GFI and built in sockets...

Id rather go with the plain ones and do something w the shades.

My sister's bathrooms all had these sorts of sconces (Sears 1939) and all the built-in sockets had been disconnected.

That said, the GFI function for my kitchen is at the breaker box and I don't need the actual outlets to be GFI, they can be plain ones and function the same way. (At least that's how I understand it will be done).
