What else are you putting down before the flooring "planks"?

Two layers 3/4 inch plywood.

I always think floorboards look best running the long length of the room. I have beams in my livingroom that run parallel to the short wall and floorboards running parallel with the long length of the room. Good advice and reference although my ceiling is much lower!

My ceiling is 8', the bottom of the beams are 7' 4" off the floor. I think it looks fine, but my beams are not authentic like yours and I don't have boards between my beams. My house was built in 1959 and so I have fake beams on drywall. I still think you should run the floor boards the long dimension of the room. Your tile was laid that way and it probably looked good in that direction? But what's also important is how the flooring will tie in with adjoining rooms.

These are my floors, original (1840) random pine planks. View is from the back door. Different directions because I think the dining area and adjacent borning room was the original house. Maybe 10 years later the kitchen sitting room was added.

Your floors would run in the opposition direction of the beams as did mine.
