I sure would not do wood ones if they are going to be painted to match the baseboard so get the steel ones and spray paint them to match .

The wood ones do not have a damper so they are just vent covers, not registers. The wood ones also probably do not have as much net free area and will restrict air flow more than the steel ones. I sure would not buy spendy wood ones to get less performance and then paint them.

Have you considered a narrow floor vent cover? Here is an example of a 2X14 Inch unfinished red oak vent cover. You could stain it to match the new oak floor. It also has a damper if you need to regulate the air flow. If you do a could stain match they will be hardly noticeable.

This wood register cover with an adjustable damper looks nice and you could stain it to match the floor or paint it to match the trim. It may not be worth $100 though. Frankly, I think once you remove the floor covering and the label from the metal register cover it'll be fine.

If you're willing to spend a bit more, go to Modern Metal to get nicer floor grilles. I know the owner of this company and their products are terrific.
