picking an entry door

We are renovating our 1979 split level. I know this wasn’t the greatest era for design. But I also don’t want to completely erase the original style of the house. We are going to replace the railings. We are going to sand and lighten the window frames. Floors are also getting replaced, we are looking at terrazzo tile for the landing. Option one matches the windows and seems true to the era. Option two is more modern. What do you think?

Thanks Beverly, can you elaborate? I don’t see the difference between the second picture you posted and the second option I posted, other than the color.

Sorry I meant the first option I posted

Changing the railings is pretty huge. What are you changing them to? 1979 is a little past the terazzo floor era and so forth. So, overall, I'm not sure the door is as big a deal as you think...

We need more light in the entry and the door is cracked on the outside, it’s also very drafty, it doesn’t fit well. So it needs to be replaced. The railing is going to be slats that go floor to ceiling. (The design is code, I’ve checked). I know terrazzo is more 60’s but we like it.

It also has a giant ship carved into the front of it, doesn’t really fit my style

Beverly's last option seems best in terms of style.

That’s not going to add enough light.

If it we me, I’d wait until the railings and flooring are finished, as you may get a very different sense of the space. As well, the exterior should be considered. You’ll probably receive more helpful advice when pictures of finished foyer and exterior are provided.

IMO you are trying to go MCM in a home that does not go that direction easily can you show us the exterior and honestly thosentry door needs to work with thta.e windows above the door are not IMO working for any style direction you might be trying to go. Replace those with plain glass and that will add to the light in the entry. Real terazzo is awesome but IMO not in thta style of house. I need to see the exterior of the home since IMO an entry door needs to work with the style of the home

Apparently after I googled it I found terrazzo had a resurgence in the 70’s. So that’s not off actually. Our house is slightly mid century. We have a lava rock fireplace and wood paneled ceilings. I’m definitely not going to redo the house to a strictly 1979 aesthetic. That would be weird. What’s the point in renovating then. So it’s not going to be 100% period accurate. What house renovation is?!
