@dan1888 It depends, my neighbors had an emergency a few weeks back, the cop parked across my driveway, and went into their house, and the ambulance guys came and they walked right into my house without ringing the bell (thinking it was my house, the cop car blocked my mailbox with the number I guess).

Good thing my wife was out walking the dog, it's a Pitbull... It wouldn't be a pretty picture if the dog was home at the time.

That said some towns around here have house numbers on the curb, in addition to having a number on the house. When going for a Certificate of occupancy, being this a new or existing house, or a rental you must have the house number visible and the proper size. When it's dark the navigation will get you there but you still have to look for a house number.

This is what I had installed when I had the front porch rebuilt at my former house. I was on a quiet cul-de-sac street with big trees and not many streetlights (so it was dark) and I loved the backlit numbers because guests and delivery people could find my house. (Pic is prior to staining porch ceiling and door.) I hope to use these again if/when I buy my next home.

In December the delivery services hire seasonal help who aren't familiar with the neighborhood and even with their gps can't find the broad side of a barn. So every bit of signage you have helps.

Add a yard sign for the holidays.

We'd been here almost 10 years when I realized we didn't have our numbers on the house. No delivery people had complained and I had never noticed. They are on a post aligned vertically at the top of the driveway, no where on the house. I couldn't find any indication there ever had been....1955 MCM.

I ordered large clear-to-read numbers only (no street name, this is a short dead end street) outlined in brass and mounted them above the mail slot. The mail slot is at the garage, not the front door, but the number is clearly visible no matter which side of the circular drive you might enter from. The outer garage lights are on an all night timer and illuminate them at night.

I often have to go to customer's homes and am surprised by how small the numbers are, especially if the house is set back from the road. Or the vertical ones on the mailbox post that are almost the same color as the post! Not really helpful.

Hidden or illegible numbers in the dark are great when you order a "30 minutes or free pizza!" (Not so great when first responders are looking for you.)

Years ago, we received an official looking mailing about the township requiring visible house numbers, and needing to arrange for the numbers to be painted on the front curb. It wasn’t official, but a cleverly worded ad from a business that did the painting. A few people around my area did have the painting done, I think before the township had a notice printed in the newspaper that it was a borderline scam. As you might expect from business of questionable practices, the paint wore away quickly.

@worthy LOL Are They still doing that? I thought these days are long gone when they did that.

I would have never imagined there was that much to write about address numbering! (Unless I were paid by the word.)

30 or free ended about ten years ago hereabouts. Police all over were not happy with the effect on driver safety.

Nav systems are limited. Have a house number up and clearly visible. If cell is down, nav systems are garbage. In my town, they insist on actual NUMBERS set out the old fashioned way.

I have been here for five years. Google Maps drops people off at the beginning of my road. Waze sends people to the end of my road.

I all too frequently get delivery guys knocking at my door asking me which house would be, say, #39. Which is NOT my house and I do have my house number out by the driveway. I'd hate that to be an emergency call responder.

Nav system says ”you've arrived at your destination” …. not helpful without #s.

Navigation with a house number or not will put you at the location, still, if a number is not visible you still have to look for it ( done hundreds of estimates at night using navigation with the exact addresses I know for a fact).

If there is an emergency every second counts... Period.

Nav systems can be off by a few hundred feet in newer <10 year old subdivisions and/or send you to the same street in an adjacent county. Common occurrence with jobsite deliveries past few years. GPS that is dependent on cell signals is not always reliable.

Local building code dictates a minimum height, contrasting background. Recommend lighting.

Fire/life safety is the priority, whether you get your deliveries is secondary.

When i get deliveries i have to advise the company ( or services such as Door Dash, etc. ) to ignore nav directions. Nav directs them to a non existent entry point more than a half mile away from my house. This happens AlWAYS unless I advise them to follow my directions.
