Brad, someone from the daylily forum suggested we include you folks. The idea is that you would post your daylilies beginning with each letter. The letters change every other day and are always preceded by jokes. I don’t know anything about daylilies but would love to see the ones you have.

Nicholworth, I do have to clean off many of the large leafed hostas in the front where my maple and the city’s locust tree are. They drop a variety of ”stuff” especially in spring.

sherrygirl : Looking through my pics, I only have 10 named Day Lilies, so my appearances will be limited, and possibly the ones I post won't be considered good performers by other members. But I would still like to participate, if possible, as I love all my day lilies.

Please check in! The hope is to find good performers if you have room for another daylily. No need to post blooms if you dont want to….ask questions instead. There are quite a few hybridizers with lots of experience ready to help!

I had no idea there were so many varieties of hosta.

I actually have a single specimen (with no name apart from hosta). Generally ignored by me since within a week of its emergence, it invariably looks moth-eaten and undistinguished. I can barely believe all these pics of entirely intact leafage. How can this be? I managed to keep mine relatively intact for a couple of months,by using UK pennies as a mulch...but a heavy hailstorm soon put paid to the unblemished foliage. Surely there are slugs, snails, hailstones and wayward footballs in the US?

Well, most don’t post photos of the ratty ones, like this August Moon…

Yeah, but I can't even manage to keep a single plant looking pristine...never mind dozens of them, IGG. O, and your 'ratty' August Moon looks a million times tidier than my sad and sorry hosta.

Wish we still called them funkias though.

Rosaprimula, the secret to keeping hostas looking good is to buy the “slug resistant” ones. There’s a list of them in the HL under the listing Rawson’s Lists, middle column,second down. Also, I do a ammonia or vinegar drench twice a year. A ratio of 1 part vinegar or ammonia to 10 parts water. You pour this over the pips as they come up in spring to kill any slugs/eggs already there and then in the fall to kill eggs laid to hatch next spring. This makes a HUGH difference! I have lots and lots of hostas and with one person helping it takes about 30 minutes. Maybe that will encourage you to buy some other hostas ===> but I warn you, it’s addictive!

rosaprimula it looks like you will have to come over to the Hosta Forum to keep enjoying the diversity. It seems like it has been deleted from the Perennial & Daylily forums. We are doing the B's now. We have a NO ID category after the alphabet is done and we will be able to tell you the name of yours. Better yet you can start a new post to get an ID and join in the fun.

Great to see everyone's A's. I will contribute what I have. Unfortunately, I usually organize my pictures during the winter season. So many of my photos are not filed away until the new year.

My Amalia is the tiniest thing! I envy those of you who are growing it well. I have 4 Abiqua Drinking Gourds, but have found no picture yet. That usually means it didn't do that well last season. I'll have to look into that!

Rosaprimula, there are some hosta that just attract slugs and pests like a magnet. For me, one hosta like that is Lemon Lime. Every time I checked for slugs, there they were! My plan is to move it to a pot. Why not try a thicker leaved hosta (like Debra suggested)? You might just fall in love with hosta!

ps: actually.. collectors and collectors.. and putting roses aside.. the collector nuts out here are.. in no particular order.. hosta.. daylily and roses ... and then other things.. ive been on a couple national hosta tours.. and where hosta peeps dont have shade.. they grow daylily.. and many struggle NOT to start another collection ...

Yeah, I have been on the collector train... a propensity for gigantic briar roses acts as something of a limiting factor. Haven't bought one for 6 years now...but there's always something twitching on my plant radar - scented pelargoniums, auriculas, salvias etc.etc.

I had one of those glaucous-leaved, t tardianum types...and I also had one which supposedly had the best white flowers (names escape me of both) plus have definitely had a few real common ones over the years but all vanished in holey ignominy, even the so-called snail proof ones. But hey, I may rescue the sad one at the allotment and have another go-round under the ceonothus at home (there will be spaces since I am removing a failed paeony).

Ken, Brad is not in charge of the daylily alphabet, I am for the time being. I don’t know why he got his undies in a bundle………. that’s unlike him. Yep, he is old like me : )
