Dining Room Design

I am trying to figure out how to make my dining room work. We built this house 2.5 years ago while out of state, so I didn’t realize how narrow the dining room was. It is 9’3” x 13‘. I’ve decided that the light is entirely too big for the room and needs to go (it’s 48 inches long and 12 inches wide). I currently have a 36”x60” table. I’m also considering a round table, I only need four chairs everyday, but would like to be able to have 6 if needed. I also plan to do white board and batten around the bottom of the walls. Any suggestions for what i can do to make this space better?

IMO board and batten isn't going to add anything to the space. The door and the window are breaking up the wall area already. I imagine it would be problematic to paint the ceiling as this room is open to the kitchen. You would have to do all of it. But a different wall or ceiling color would help to call attention to the tray ceiling which is now almost unnoticeable. I would add a rug. There is no need to change the table or the light fixture unless you were going to regardless. A rectangular table suits the dimensions of the room better than a round one would. The tablecloth doesn't go at all. If it's on you have out just this time of year then no worries. Red or green don't look good in my dining room either. :-)

But what’s not working? I actually like your light but your table seems too small? What other function is not working? There are many decorative things you can do, but that’s all a matter of your taste (which you should post more about) and should follow function.

I would have the ceiling painted white. Would stay with a rectangular table due to the size of the room. Have two sconces installed on the wall where " a geratful heart" piece is hanging. Either remove it, or put it on the other side of the wall and install a large enough piece of art between the sconce. Have wallpaper put up on the top part of the wall once your batten is installed. There are so many options out there now, so you'd need to choose something to your liking.

Change the hanging light fixture as you plan to do.

The wall lights with the light fixture should add enough light, as well as a cozy feel ( just don't go with 4000K or above bulbs). The wallpaper would also had warmth and character, especially if you're not going to have a rug on the floor.

Oh, and have dimmers on the lights ( make sure they are LED compatible if you're going to use LED lights).

Is this your only dining space? If so, I would get a longer, narrower table and move it as close to the window as possible to allow the side door to open. Put the sideboard elsewhere. With a longer table, the chandelier may be okay.

Down the road, you might consider swapping out the windows for sliders or French doors to improve the connection to the outdoors.

I would say no to board and batten . It would close the walls further in. Do a white ceiling and keep the walls light. Light fixture is OK. Keep a long rectangular table but lose the tablecloth and the valence over the door. Some lighter brighter drapes might help too. Instead of those 2 little pictures, I would find one larger rectangular piece of art that would complement a pretty color in our new drapes.
