Here’s a beauty, but I think it’s important to see the artwork you’ve selected. It can be very interesting to see a relationship between the art and the ligting - such as repeating shapes - that bring harmony to the room. Also, any light fixtures that can be seen in adjoining rooms should harmonize with the chandelier. Can you provide a wider shot of the surrounding area?

I like chandeliers that actully light the table not the ceiling. Please get rid of the leaning mirror that is not at all appropriate for a DR I think a DR light is like a great piece of jewellry it does not need to go with any other lighting.How about something like this it is so different it can work with any other lighting you might have and a bit of fun

The first thing I gravitate toward when visiting someone’s home is their collection of personal photos, whether it’s friends and family, places they’ve been, or just photos they love. Displaying them in black and white unifies all the subjects.

I agree also to remove the mirror. I would look for artwork that complements your other nice piece. Maybe find that and then look for a chandelier.

Very nice room…winds breath will be beautiful! Just a suggestion…I would hang mirror over buffet so it reflects the chandelier and large art on the wall you have the floor mirror on.

With the rest of the room being more classic than contemporary, you want something that can pull double duty--modernize it, without looking out of place. I'd go with something rectangular or oval.

The rug looks blue gray in your photos. This posting could benefit from better photos.

I would suggest waiting untill the room is painted, you get curtains up. I think your going to find the buffet area becomes obvious, and neither the table or buffet are contemporary they are traditional Beverly's shown you a more updated look that would work. Id consider painting the buffet so it looks more built in.

You mentioned that you have replaced the buffet with large artwork. That piece may be one that drives other decisions. Can you post a photo? On the other hand, if this is something you have only planned to do, and you need storage, I like RL Relocation LLC’s idea to give it a built in look by painting it in Winds Breath to match the color you plan to paint the walls.

Since I;ve been in the market for a new dining room fixture, I have saved several that I think might work nicely in your space.

I did like the first one shared by palms, and the second one by Home Interiors with Ease ( the one on the right).

Anyway here are some more. I think modern traditional or transitional seems to work nicely in your space.

I would go in the opposite direction and advise you to base your chandelier decision on your own desires , the furniture and wall colors because drapes, artwork and rugs are easier to switch out than the furniture which you inherited, which I am sure you are likely to keep for a while. 

Here are a few that would look stunning in your space. The Black Marimba chandelier mimics the darkness of the wood in the chairs. In the case you prefer to choose a chandelier after getting artwork and a rug, the round light chandelier would fit the art work and is plain enough (versatile) to fit any Artwork you choose. The Bon Air one will bring out the gold or yellows in the rug and artwork should you use them

If these are over your price limit, I can find something more affordable. You have recieved great samples of chandeliers from everyone else in the comments here, as well.

Thank you, everyone for your expert suggestions. I really appreciate them! I am very new to interior decorating and I find it hard to blend my traditional furniture with contemporary pieces that look good together.

The rug is cream with gold and silver-grey in it. The grey has a light blue undertone which I’m trying to downplay since I prefer warm tones.

Does anybody have any suggestions on chandeliers that are brushed nickel or silver-toned? The painting and artwork have grey-silver in them too.

I was asked to post a picture of the hutch so here it is. I replaced the hutch with modern artwork in an attempt to update the room and make it look more transitional or contemporary.

As for updating the living room, 2 new end tables, coffee table, and replacing the green love seat with 2 chairs.

I agree remove the floor mirror..add a large wall mirror over the buffet and hang art on the large wall…

I think the issue is, again the wall color. And it kinda looks like you went to Home Goods and bought two rugs and a painting to match, because you thought they where modern in appeal.

1. you can slip cover your sofas to get a more clean look, but the oak tables will date the look I would work on those next in your living room. Get the room painted its going to refresh the look.

I am going to paint the walls in both rooms Wind’s Breath colour. You’re correct, I bought the painting and rugs at Homesense to match, thinking they were more contemporary. I am an amateur trying to learn. This is why I appreciate everyone’s suggestions so much!

I tried to find slip covers for my sofa and loveseat but failed. They were all stretchy spandex-polyester and looked cheap. Any suggestions on where I can buy slipcovers that look like upholstered furniture in Canada? I was originally looking for off-white slip covers, although I wonder if this will look washed out with Wind’s Breath colour on the walls.

And to your point, this is why painting first is going to make the most impact.
