Kitchen Reno - Wall oven or Range?

last modified: 3 years ago

We're trying to figure out whether to get a range or separate stove top & wall oven...

What are pro's and con's to both options (range or separate appliance)?

To those of you with separate appliances, how did you use the space under the stove top?

Note: We are doing an expasion and complete remodel. Currently, the kitchen is set up for separate appliances.

It's not a question that can be answered in isolation -- it depends on the size of your kitchen and how it's laid out. Same for microwave over cooktop or hood -- not always an option to have the latter...

space under stove top = cupboard or drawer(s) to store pots/pans

The biggest plus for a wall oven is that it is easier to get larger items in and out of a wall oven than to have to bend over and remove a large roasting pan from the bottom rack of a range. I think there might be a thread on here about someone dissatisfied with her wall oven because it is too small for a large roasting pan or big cookie sheet.

Wall oven is so much more convenient and easier on the back

As a renter I have had both, and its a real difference

Depends on size and space as well as budget. If all things were equal, I would go for the wall oven.

One added disadvantage can be the range door …when open …it could block the traffic pattern…in our kitchen we use the microwave and toaster oven more frequently… and they are mounted at eye level …which is much more convenient…

My friend with a tiny kitchen was able to expand the size of her kitchen by putting a wall oven in the open space above her basement stairwell. For her layout, having a separate cook top and oven was a huge upgrade over a range. She used a drawer base under the cooktop for utensils and pots and pans storage.

If you are short on counter space, a range makes more sense. But, if you have sufficient counter space and budget, go for the wall oven for convenience.

I considered both, but went with the range. It meant more counter space, plus it's easier to replace a standard size range. Once you have the wall oven cabinet, you're limited in replacement wall ovens.

IMO this is decided on many factors. How do you cook and do you prfer gas, induction or old style electric. The size of the kitchen and the budget are both IMO the top reasons for making these choices. I run a catering bix from my home I have botha 36" all gas range and double electric wall ovens I like gas for making pizza and any yeast doughs. I use my ovens probably more than my range top for many things . If you want some help here with space and layout post a to scale floor plan showing all windows, doorways and where those doorways lead . Plumbing if it can't be easily moved , all measurements clearly marked . Think about your budget and also the electrical if you plan to go induction. Many things to be considered when designing a kitchen.

Thx so much. We actually capped our gas line. So we only have electric. I’ll amend the post to include rough drawings of the layout. However, we don’t know the exact dimensions because we’re expecting an expansion of the space as part of the reno (see: the rectangle on the top-right of the drawing, above the kitchen and dining room)

We are working to get plans drawn with a designer now. And, we're probably going to keep the wall between the kitchen and the “dining room”, as that will be repurposed as an auxiliary space (bedroom, office down the road?)… Also, that particular wall in the kitchen is already set up for appliances, and that wall is where our stove top is. Currently, the wall oven is right in that corner where the “Living Room” meets the “dining room.”

Essentially, what defines the Family Room and kitchen in the drawing is a roughly 20 x 17 space, which will be combined for an open concept dining area and kitchen.

We won hundred percent plan to go induction, it’s just a matter of whether we figure out the appliance situation. It seems like a range is better for space saving and storage, while separate appliances is optimal for comfort and convenience, while in the kitchen.
