Ok, maybe not too much help, but here goes. I’m very chemical sensitive. I’ve been using “Zero Odor” products (laundry detergent etc, spray around house, etc) and have been happy. I read about your Downy and what worries me is that it still comes scented, despite saying Fragrance Free on label. The Zero Odor (bought on Amazon) products have a tracer scent that disappears after a minute or so. They have freshened fabrics, old furniture, room smells, etc and no leftover scent.

Seems like it's basically citric acid.

I’m late to the party, but YES! It is better than 9 Elements Purifying Softener. Likely because of stronger citric acid concentration and no vinegar. The scent is stronger than I would like, but it works great with hard water issues. I would imagine that front loaders will maximize the effects with lower water use.
