Long hall on 2nd floor?

We moved into a 2 story house a few months ago. Never lived in a 2 story before. I’m not sure what to do with the long hall at the top of the stairs. On one side are 2 bedrooms, a full bath, and the stairs. on the other side is just a long wall (attic storage on other side of the wall). Theres a bonus space on one end of the hall. Do I just hang tons of photos? I’m lost.

At the top of the stairs, theres several feet before you get to the hall.

It's a hallway therefore a pathway and yours seems too narrow to put a console or anything else. Leave it empty. A runner would be nice. Photos framed the same way/style and placed a few inches to a foot apart on that wall would look nice. Spend an extra penny to make the frames look nice, try 3 large 24 x 36 frame with glass or smaller sizes (4 to 6 frames) depending on how long that wall is.

You could add wainscoting halfway or 2/3rds up the walls or even wall paper adding art and photo frames above. Extra wall lights would add light. Depending on your flooring underneath you could lift the carpet and add color and style with runners. Here’s a few inspiration photos off of Pinterest.Com Good luck!

You're probably just looking for decorating solutions, but a more ambitious (and expensive) option is to recess some cabinets and shelves into the wall. This will visually widen the walkway and add interest to the space. It would reduce the amount of storage space in the attic, but might be worth considering.

Ah, all excellent suggestions! You’re right, more of a decor solution than design solution is what I needed. But the idea of recess shelving is enticing as is the wainscoting. Were lucky that we have plenty of storage space already. Very grateful for this community!

DO you have waincoting in the rest of the house ? I see the need for some much better lighting . For me this empty wall cries for art or a really awesome collection of familt pics I like them all in the same frames just differt matt sizes but any art you love would be awesome Unless you have really wonderful pieces that need display I would not do the shelving.

You've gotten some excellent ideas. Not much I can add except it is a very good space for artwork and a photo gallery. I will suggest that you could do what we do on long hallways. That would be to build some engaged pilasters that will break the hallway up into sections and would lessen the long, linear character of the hallway.

Perhaps something like this? (I agree about the lighting, it could use some improvement.)

As far as wainscoting, weve got this in the office downstairs. The previous owners remodeled downstairs and it turned out lovely. The lighting upstairs is original (decades old). another

photo of downstairs for reference. I’m not a fan of the light carpet upstairs so I hope theres wood underneath..

By the way, lighting in the office is updated but awful and will need to be replaced.

Hanging a ton of pictures will have to be well thought out, as there has to be consistency and balance. Painting far wall is another idea.

Suggest looking at lots of inspiration pictures (search long upstairs hallways on Pintetest) and identify ideas you like/how to combine.

First thing I would do is paint white to lighten/enlarge visually. Then consider consistency; ie: lighting, hardware and frames.

You can buy inexpensive frames at Ikea and bristol board at a craft store, for an easy inexpensive and updated look. I like fewer and larger for more impact and it doesn’t feel as busy.

It is a narrow hallway. Add interest with some color contrast and a few simple pictures. Don't overwhelm with too many pictures/things. Love the idea of creating a nook.

Use a textured wall paper to add dimension or a bolder paint color with more contrast or paint the doors some fun color(s).

Maybe use wall sculpture vs pictures that can be hard to appreciate in a narrow space.

    Update the lighting.

Hope you find those wood floors you want underneath the carpet. I've read that a patterned runner that widens the appearance of the hall helps make it look less endless. Such a pattern like a horizontal stripe works to fool the eye. Nice home btw.
