Prime Cabinetry

We're about to start our kitchen, and I need to make a final decision on cabinets. Actually we'll order all the cabinets for a big kitchen, two bathrooms, and built ins to match.

We're RTA plain shaker folks. We used Prime Cabinetry before (https://www.primecabinetry.com/stocked-cabinets/unassembled-kitchen-cabinets.html) when we lived near there. We didn't hate them, but I also was a little worried that they'd eventually fall apart with my rough kids. The fronts dinged really easily. But compared to some RTAs I've seen, the quality was better. They didn't feel like complete crap. I've walked through building supply stores with the complete crap cabinets that we're doing well in the showroom.

I've been reading about different RTA makers where ever I can find reviews. It sounds like the categories for RTA are Ikea, cheap Chinese junk, and Barker/Scherr/Conestoga. Is that accurate?

I'm scared of Ikea with ordering difficulties and decreased quality in the last few years. I'm scared of Chinese imports for quality, though, again, we didn't hate Prime. I really like the look of Barker and I can wait for the lead time, but the price is a lot more. $11K with prime and $17K with Barker and I will need to paint the fronts. I have a sprayer and I know how to use it successfully on walls, but that's one more thing I need to do.

Has anyone else used Prime Cabinetry? Anyone love Barker? Any advice/help to get me to finalize a decision? Knock some sense into me?

It is a big kitchen going into a lake house we are renovating (it will be our full time residence), where other houses on the lake that are well done (and not many are well done, but they are slowly being renovated) sell for a million.

Help please! And thank you! :)

Why limit yourself to those? You can get already finished and assembled cabinetry from many makers for just a bit more than Barker. You can’t begin to get the same tough factory finish as a manufactured cabinet, so that is worth a lot! This is a thread that I have referred to more than once. Prices will have gone up at least 40% from that, but it is still useful. https://www.houzz.com/discussions/5647040/white-shaker-battle-ikea-vs-the-rest-of-the-cabinet-world

I wouldnt hestitate to put in another Ikea Sektion kitchen. I only have experience with the veddinge fronts, but theyre great. We also put them in our kids bathroom. zero complaints.

You could consider using the easy to assemble ikea boxes with semi handmade fronts, doors, panels.

I just did my second kitchen with Scherr's and they were perfect. Also did bathrooms in the new house. If you are planning deeper cabinets, they were the only ones who would (or could) do the deeper soft-close drawers, which is amazing in kitchens if you cook a lot.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting I had read that Ikea cabinet quality went way down in the last year or two. Do you feel they are the same quality now as they were 20 years ago? I do like their price point. And I would use a true shaker door from another company like @sheloveslayouts suggests.

But I look at my Ikea bookshelves and how they just didn't really hold up to moving and I pause and get nervous. Though maybe it is silly of me to think that way bc I won't move my kitchen.

@c9pilot I really like Scherr's. I had an order ready to go with them back in November, but when they said they wouldn't ship out until next summer I just couldn't. If I had realized how long my remodel would take and ordered them last summer it would have been a non issue, but alas I did not have the foresight at that point. :/

@Ouroboros Design You've got me looking into other options. I read through that thread and followed the rabbit hole and found an Amish custom place near me that I think might be the same place cpartist describes. I'm at least going to get a few more quotes locally like that. Thank you for mentioning it. :)

Ikea cabinets are a completely different animal than the Sektion line. Hopefully Patricia will chime in on quality the last two years. We last bout cabs in 2016.

I’ve learned some expensive lessons with ikea furniture. A back breaking sectional and a secretary desk that fell apart after a couple moves come to mind,so you’re not wrong about those products.

@sheloveslayouts So Sektion specifically is better quality than the other Ikea furniture? Thank you. That does help me. I think our neighbors put in their Ikea kitchen around that year as well and it was nice. If they still are that quality I would be less worried.

@User Oh! That's the part I'd read about the bad quality of the new line. I didn't understand that line went into stores and Sektion was only online and hard to get. Thank you for clarifying for me.

IMO if you do not use Ikea doors no point the doors are the expensive part of cabinets and the Ikea warranty is usleless if you use different doors . In all my years of doing Ikea I have never had a client thta I coulld not design for using Ikea doors So if different doors then just get everything from some RTA company at least then you might have some sort of warranty .I am finding that now the Ikea cabinets seem to be coming into stock a lot faster than a year ago. I did not find sektion only online but the stock was decidely slow to come in like every other RTA cabinet company during Covid.
