Help with bathroom layout

last modified: 3 years ago

Any ideas to improve this bathroom layout within its footprint? I had our architect reduce sq footage and simplify the master bath and now I’m regretting it. Deciding whether to work with this or go back to the original with a water closet, but a lot has changed in the plan since then

edited to add - I’m open to ideas where the closet access is from the bathroom instead of the bedroom

A 6'6" wide closet isn't wide enough to have hanging space on both sides, is that OK with you? I like the bathroom, but if you're going to miss the water closet I guess you'll have to go back to the drawing board. I had one in my previous house's master bath but I don't have one now. I don't miss it, but only you know whether it is a requirement for you.

Consider this concept that widens the closet (to 7'-0") at the vanity and narrows the closet (to 6'-0") at the shower.

Add windows in the bathroom and closet.

I agree about that closet - hanging takes up 24" so if hang on both sides you will only have 30" in the center to walk down - I would want at least 6 more inches or more. Since this is a new build, make sure they frame it that way!.

As for the bathroom, I dislike toilet rooms, but if you really want it , now is the time to fix it.

I would keep separate entries for the bathroom and closet, but that's just me. If it gives you a better configuration, then go ahead, just keep in mind that you loose space in whichever room is stuck with the 2 doors.

I would turn your shower - it will make the linen larger and the vanity - maybe slide the window towards the toilet .

    Good luck

I’d add make the door to the closet a pocket door— I wish I did that in my master addition

I like debbi’s drawing. shower door swing looks very hard to enter in yours? i’d rather have a window open to toilet and have zero need for a seperate room but appears they are popular. You’d need a lot more space for it though and assuming you put that square footage to better use. i also wouldn’t need more than 12’ of hanging space so that closet would work fine (it’s like 3x size of mine lol so i’m probably not the best judge).

I like Mark Bischak, Architect 's layout. I am gestimating that if the closet is 7'0" wide, the shower door at the most would be 2'0" (maybe I am wrong). It seems that you plan on having shelves on the South wall in your closet. I don't think you need a 7'0" wide closet in that case, 6'9" will work fine. Then you can make your shower door 3" wider. You might consider reconfigurating your closet this way if the shower is stealing space in the closet.

If you think two people will use the sink at the same time, by all means keep the two sinks. However, in my experience, it's quite unlikely to be the case and the counter space will be more valuable than a second sink.

In general, two kids sharing a bathroom will need a bath tub, whereas two adults are relatively unlikely to find brushing teeth at the same time convenient.

I was thinking more like this:

@Mark Bischak, Architect where do you suggest hanging the bath towels?

On a hook just outside the shower opening ready for use, and on towel bars under the small awning windows to dry.

Mark, that’s exactly what we do, with a similar bathroom arrangement.

I like Mark’s arrangement, ours is similar. But our bathroom is longer and narrower, so the toilet is between the vanity and shower. Here, I might leave the toilet behind the door like Debbi’s idea, and the linen close to the shower, so you can easily reach for shampoo or soap if the one in the shower runs out.

Here are a couple other ideas

The top one gives you a toilet room and 7 feet in the closet, but 4 feet less in length in the closet. Window in the toilet room and also next to the shower.

The second layout has a 6 foot vanity, 3 foot space for the toilet and 3 foot wide shower by 7 feet long. You could skip the door to the shower and use that space for drying off and hanging towels. Or it could be a shower for two.

You could also cut the toilet space to 34 inches and give the extra inches to your vanity or shower.. You could add a window to the closet. I had one in my last house, though I kept the translucent shade closed all the time. It was nice not to turn a light on all the time.
