Bathroom design help please!

We are looking to keep this shelf( there are two glass shelves we can put on the first two spaces) for storing small items.
I am thinking of extending the recess to accommodate hanging towels/robe. Adding hooks to hang them on. The switch box is no longer hooked up so it will be removed. Then paint the border to match the vanities , and put some tiles we used on the floor to line the back. Ideas? Has anyone seen anything like this? I would love your input.

We will cover the ship lap with beadboard. This is the other side of the bathroom.

Since that area is already in place I just thought to extend it rather than cover it up, leave the shelf notches and put the shelves back, I thought it would look strange hanging the towels in front of the recess or putting hooks as it is the towels wouldn’t lay flat.

Here it is with part of it covered.

Is that just a tub or a tub/shower?

I think extending it might be a good idea but I wouldn't put the floor tiles in there. Too much. You don't want it to be a focal point.

It’s a tub/shower, now that I’m thinking about it I’m going between just painting the shiplap instead of covering it with beadboard I’m worried about water damage.

How was the shower waterproofed behind the tile?

The tub surround has the hardieboad underneath.

I usually put robe hooks on the back of doors in bathrooms. As long as it isn't a pocket door that works. I have also put towel bars on doors if there isn't any other wall space for them.

    What should be redone?

I’m not understanding what you mean by waterproof. The shiplap has hardieback board and then the tile on top of it. The wall on the side where the old recessed cabinet is outside of the tub. Are you saying to remove the shiplap and put drywall in its place?

What kind of hardie board did you use? Did you tape the joints between the boards? Do you have pics of how you waterproofed the shower?

I’m sorry I don’t have pics but it was already done. I misunderstood about what you were asking, I just wanted advice about the wall next to the tub. This was just covered with paneling and wallpaper, I was concerned about that mdf beadbosrd , and what to do with the old cabinet., this is where we will hang our towels.

The problem is if it wasnt properly waterproofed, youre looking at possible water damage in the not so distant future
