Small ranch- Paint color ideas

I will be painting our house this Spring and wanted to see if anyone had paint color ideas for the house (please don't say white, will not do white and my neighbor's house is white). I just removed the shutters and, to me, it looks bland as is. I will be removing the bigger bush by the front door and replacing it with a raised flower/garden bed. The remaining flower bed is full of

colorful perennials come late Spring. Any help/ideas/pictures would be greatly appreciated.

We just did our siding on our ranch last spring in BM Raccoon fur I love it is not quite stark black is really dark. Just for fun this is my fave for inspiration for MCM landscaping Even the nice dark gray in the pic will work. I am not sure what your style is but your front door IMO does not suit the house so check out the front door and garage door in the pic.

I would not paint and use the money for a better front door. Find a doormat with colors, and paint the front door one of the colors from the door mat. Add coordinating pillows to the chairs. If you go with a bold front door, paint the garage door the same color as the house. You can also do a wood front door with a matching garage door, although $$$. The house looks like it’s in good shape, and the color is fine, just needs a little life. 🙂

Paint garage same as the house, so focus is on a bright front door with complementary potted planters in the growing season. Put two bright chairs in that corner instead of the dark ones. Down the road, as budget allows, get slate steps, steppings stones or walkway, to enhance the cottage feel of your house.

Thank you for all for your advice/suggestions. I would have thought to stay away from dark colors- but then did a little searching and some look really nice. The replacement of the front door is definitely do-able. There are so many options 5, 4, 3, full light. Assuming I should stay away from the mission top 3 light exterior door? I'm a black, gray, white kind of person, so adding a bold color for the front door will be pretty scary.

    what is the roof color?

Take a good look at the picture of your house - you end up looking at the white garage door, and the dark front entry is not inviting. Painting the garage door the same color as the house and emphasizing the front door is more welcoming. If you don’t want a bold color, stay in the soft, muted green/blue family, or even a dark purple.

    A couple purples

I do love those color suggestions for the front door. When I had shutters (I know, I know) I did actually have the similar purple color for a while. I will paint the garage door the same as the house color. Our roof has Pewter Gray architectural shingles.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I think I'm going to go bold with the exterior paint, either the BM Raccoon or BM Kendall Charcoal, possibly a deep navy. New front door is on order, however, I'm wondering about the new light fixtures, do I stay with black or go with something else if I'm using such a dark house color? Thoughts?

you can do any color you like. why not wait until it's painted, then come back w/new pics? I can photoshop some colors for you.

here's a few similar dark homes so you can see options. wood accents always lool nice

wood look garage door w/batten panels done in black. blac trim too

white trim, white garage, black door

black w/white door/wood doors, charcoal trim

@Beth H. : Thank you so much. I thought of adding some large copper planters as accents too if adding the wood accents got to be too costly. What I'd love to do and what the pocketbook will allow, are very different. LOL. Just trying to get some things planned out now, so that when the snow/or threat of snow is gone we can move forward. Thanks again for all your help.

if you can DIY, you can add wood accents easily.

make a wood placque for your address numbers

I like this style light too

you can easily make something like this, paint it, add numbers, a little box, and do some faux succulents.

tons of ways to do it. get smaller piece of walnut (or similar color wood) varnish it, screw on your numbers

this one is $265! get a piece of metal or wood, get the modern masters metal look stuff and spray it on to resemble copper, add your numbers. or get a piece of copper veneer and wrap it over something. it will patina naturall

Do the same w/some terra cotta planters. spray them to look like copper.

exterior lights, you could get the galvanized metal barn lights for cheap, and spray those any color. even a lacquer bold color to match your door. or the address numbers.

    something like this look.

wood slat accents or some type of paneling? easy if you have simple DIY skills

this one is pretty cheap to do. and the plants really help make the look

here's a how to for this one. substitute redwood or cedar if you can

    https://www.ohsolovelyblog.com/diy-wood-slat-wall-cladding-modern-affordable-warmth-curb-appeal/

This one is a little nicer looking. see how nice it is next to the dark siding? (and the sprayed pots?!)

I did a similar slat wall on my own home just for my orchids.

I used a dense wood similar to Ipe, but redwood or something similar could also be used. cut the slats 1x2 and apply a marine varnish.

Did one in the backyard out of redwood w/wider planks. varnished.

(i'm just showing you these so you can see how easy it would be to something similar on your own place. It could be around the front door, or just around the garage door. Have you seen that?

see how they did around this one?

theyve even done them on garage doors

    here's a how-to for this one:

    https://inmyownstyle.com/how-to-make-a-wood-slat-wall-outdoor.html

do you have a gate or fence you could do in wood?

Lastly, another DIY. do you have a cement porch and steps? get some porch paint and a stencil and create your own 'tiled' porch.

You have that cute corner spot, so do something!

Royal Design Stencil and Cutting Edge Stencils all have a million tutorials and pattern on these.

    https://www.jennasuedesign.com/stenciled-patio-makeover-tutorial/

get yourself some wood or wicker furniture too. you can't see those black chairs.

    jute/sisal rug, some hanging plants.

check craigslist for used stuff and refinish any wood pieces that you find. people unload teak benches all the time because they have grayed and weathered. really good sanding and varnish brings them back.

find rattan pieces you can paint.

Heck, make your own wood slat benches or table! this is easier than you think

    hopefully, this helps you out?

If you do the house body in BM Hale Navy, your light fixtures, hardware, address numbers, etc. can be brushed brass - or copper.

The new door color will be a last decision since so many bright colors look fabulous with a navy body and white trim. Yellows, light or bright greens, pink, reds, you name it. It’s like putting your whole house in a classic blue suit.

If you stay with a deep charcoal body color the same could apply for your metal accessories - brass or copper.

The house doesn’t need shutters. The trim needs to be brighter to give some depth to the main color.

    Cute house!

You can go to the major paint manufacturer's websites (eg Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, and others) and play with their color visualizers - upload a good photo of your house, or just use one of theirs that is similar - you can try out siding, trim, and door colors to your heart's content!

So many great ideas! Please post finished pic when done.

There are a lot of good house color ideas already. I like the idea of keeping it dark. But I did want to say that I like your front door, and I dont see the need to change it.

I had Sherwin Williams color match BM Kendall Charcoal. I'm doing a couple little projects to test if I want it for my kitchen cupboards. I really like it. Your house will look beautiful painted that color. It goes well with black or brass and looks fabulous with stained wood. Maybe your new front door could be stained!

Teal blue would make it pop. Any color you like would look nice as it is not just a change of color needed. Great that you removed what I assume were "fake" shutters. Window boxes attached under the windows would really set it off no matter the color you choose. Any pastel that you like even light pink would be super cute. Cannot see the front door color with the glare, but a nice color on the door would do a lot also. Any color not found in the garden/lawn is good - for contrast. A teal blue color would really pop - that would be my first choice. Cute house!

A pop of color on the door is a good suggestion and a lot cheaper than painting the whole house .

I agree some larger accessories for lights, mailbox etc. & new modern door will do wonders for this house. Pops of color for them or black. My first thought was to make the front "porch" area all one height--building it up to the step height.

I agree with others, paint the garage door the same as the siding.

Loving the photos Lisedv posted, the dark charcoal and trim look amazing. You could also make a front deck spanning the front steps to the large windows
