Bathroom backsplash dilemma

3 years ago

Hello, I hope to get some advice. As you can see from the sketch above, there is a 10" high backsplash area in my 93" x 87" slightly medium sized bathroom. It's currently under renovation and this wall is still bare with a 2nd coat of drywall. 1st question: I have 2 choices in mind, either tile the entire 10 inches or tile about 7 inches up and leave 3 inches untiled. It's not an option for me to tile the entire wall up to the ceiling. I do not like the look of the standard 4 inch backsplash either.

My 2 tile choices are the following:

Mosaic honeycomb (comes in 11.75 x 11 sheet) - if i choose this tile, there may be a lot of waste unless i tile the entire 10 inches but i'm not sure about the look. My contractor says that this way is a more traditional look and I'm aiming for a more contemporary/transitional theme.

2nd tile choice:

2.5x5 subway tile - I can either tile the entire 10 inches or tile with 3 rows and leave about 2.5 inches untiled.

Appreciate any advice. Thanks! Let me know if I should provide more info.

The sketch does not show anything , post a picture of the space in a comment here do ot start another post. If you do not have the space ready for a picture then it is too early to choose back spalsh Tell about all the rest of the space and the tile used too.

Tile the full 10" with some nice edging. I do not see why you would only tile up to 7"? When your tiler said traditional way he was not stating traditional styling compared to modern he was stating -usually done this way. Anyways do the full backsplash. As far as which tile-I can not say because I have nothing to reference to.

2nd choice and the full 10” from just looking at what you posted - can’t really determine if that tile goes w/ the rest of the remodel though

@Lorraine Leroux @Sibylle

Hi Lorraine and Sibylle. Thanks for your suggestions.

i considered the 7” backsplash and leaving 3” of wall since a lot of Houzz pictures show this style with an edge trim. Anyway most people including yourself and others pretty overwhelmingly suggest covering the entire 10” of wall between countertop and bottom of mirror so I’ve decided to do that with the same quartz material that’s used for the countertop. Now my dilemma is, do quartz backsplashes need a trim on top or does the mirror just sit on the backsplash? The splash will be jutting out a bit since the mirror will be about 1/4” thick while splash will be 3/4” thick. Will it look weird? As well, originally i just wanted a frameless mirror sandwiched between 2 medicine cabinets and these will be wall to wall as seen in the sketch above but it may be too plain so I’m thinking maybe a 1/2” bevelled mirror instead Any suggestions?
