12O grit sanding wet sanding sponge. Ok I was hoping that wouldn't be the case to sand it all now.

The fine sandpaper you used polished the stainless. If you did get the scratches out that is half the battle and now you just need to blend in the repaired spot. I have done a lot of SS scratch repair with simple hand pads. Get some scotch brite pads of various grits. I would start out with a fresh green pad that is on the back of the sponge scrubbers and see what you get. If that does not blend it in go to the next course grit maybe the maroon pad and then the brownish gray pad. You should be able to get the other pads at most home stores. When you are doing this have the pads on a block of wood so you keep it flat and use light to medium pressure. A small squirt of WD-40 will also help the pad cut the graining back in the stainless steel and work some oil into the metal and help it blend in. This sounds like a lot of work but blending in the small area will be much less than doing the rest of the door front. It may not blend in perfectly and be like new but you should be able to get it pretty close.
