I love the top one. Of course it can be in a formal, elegant room. It can easily mix a silk velvet, a damask or Fortuny. This would be great with formal English, Ftench and Contemporary case goods.. i have a nice collection of art and I never once have thought about if it would "go" with my formal furnishings. It just does------ it's intuitive design. Buy what you love and it will come apparent to you how to design with and around the pieces you love.

You buy art becuae you love it it will always work in any space IMO. In fact I often do wall color to work with my art which we have been collecting for years . Can we see your room ?

Art is something that makes you feel or react and is personal but that being said I feel the first one since it is so soft it can easily be in a more elegant/formal setting

Artwork should never, ever be chosen because it matches a room. Art is meant to be selected because you love it. If you love those pieces, they'll work in your home. This is how interiors develop characters, a "soul", if you will. Any other approach produces a space that looks like a generic waiting room or chain hotel. Live with art that makes your heart sing.

Adding modern art into a more formal setting is not uncommon and can make a room feel dynamic. I prefer the first one, but it really depends on your taste, size to suit the location and if you prefer a subtle or more vibrant effect. I’d first figure out those before deciding on any art.

Put a museum-style contemporary frame on it and it will work just fine in a more formal room.
