When I was a kid, my uncles and I would regularly harvest wild white mushrooms from the field next to my parents' house. My father would never let me eat what we harvested. :p

How fun to be growing your own! I never have. We do harvest wild chanterelles (season is Fall here) but I absolutely do not trust myself to identify any of the others. And sometimes the 'others' look tempting but I'm not that confident or brave.

Congratulations, I know it is exciting! I grew oyster mushrooms once when my son gave me a bowl full of corn kernels and coffee grounds that he had "seeded". I got one nice harvest, then nasty looking things began to grow, so I put it on top of the soil in my vegetable garden to return to the earth. Well, when I went out to start the spring garden, there was another round of oyster mushroom!

I'd like to try again some day.

Winecap mushrooms can be grown outside on a bed of straw or woodchips. Apparently, they can produce mushrooms for years, if the straw or woodchips are refreshed. You can also grow many oyster mushrooms on bales of straw or layered straw beds. Grain spawn for many varieties can be purchased from a number of reputable suppliers.

Wow. Those look really good. It is frustrating how few mushrooms result from pretty significant inputs of work and substrate. That's why I'd like to get an outdoor setup going.
