I like a wood fire .

We use our gas fireplace every morning and most evenings during winter. I would use it once a month if it was wood.

Wood fires are nice, but no clean up with gas.

As someone with asthma, I can't be in a home with wood burning fire. Even days afterwards it makes my lungs spasm.

If you live where you might need a backup heat source, then wood burning makes sense.

We used to live in the northeast and lost power for 4 days during a winter storm. We were able to keep the house at 50F by using 2 wood burning fireplaces. I also boiled water on the fire for some warm tea!

Make sure your area isn't banning wood and/or gas!

Thank you everyone- we won't be using this as a major heat source- more so just a little extra warmth and coziness- we are in Arizona so it would get used Dec-January and then we start to warm up again...

It's a super neat program- the city gives a large credit to convert wood burning fireplaces- they provide the contractors and do all the work. For us it is totally free.

We loved our wood fireplace initially, but as the years passed it was used less and less due to the residue smell, effort and mess.

Our present home has gas and it suits our lifestyle and needs so much better.

A friend lost this fight with her husband. They have a beautiful wood burning fireplace that in 20 years has never had a fire in it. If it were gas she would have it on every evening. A wood burning fireplace is a young person's game--well maybe it depends on where/how you get your wood.

We had wood burning in a previous home. The fireplaces in our current home are gas with ceramic logs. Definitely our preference now. We’re in Southern CA and use them maybe Dec-Feb. Love having them.

Wood fire 100%, with an insert. For us, there's nothing that makes your home cozier. The insert is key... it kicks out an amazing heat (recent cold spell here, we've been using it every night). Whenever we have people over in the winter, they ask/comment about it, and several of our friends have purchased their own after enjoying ours.

Agree about the wood burning insert. We put one in the second house we owned in the northeast and could keep the downstairs at 70F with just that heat source. It did have an electric fan, so would not have been as effective during a power outage.

We have both. We heated primarily with wood in a fireplace insert for 40+ years until it became burdensome for reasons others have mentioned. The last two winters we’ve only used the vented gas logs, no wood fire. We like the simplicity, cleanliness, look, etc.

Our wood fireplaces kick out some serious heat, and came in quite handy a couple times when we lost power in the winter. Makes me really appreciate how intrepid the pioneers were who chose to live in cold climates. The problem with gas is that apparently you hate the earth if you have a gas stove, and what is next???🙄
