Make sure you have enough room to move around to do the wash, and room to fold. Some people like to put the washer dryer on the floor where the bedrooms are so they don't have to go up and down the stairs a million times.

Unless you can hide it in a walk-in closet with doors to close I wouldn't do it. If you needed to sell it could be a turn off for potential buyers.

This is done a lot in Europe, not so much in the US. If you have room for side by side machines you probably have enough room to put them in a closet. You could always use shelves or cabinets above the machines to store some kitchen items or cleaning supplies. I have a larger closet with stacked machines off my kitchen eating area which has a laundry tub, cleaning supplies, spare light bulbs, paper products, etc. To get more counter space in the kitchen, consider stacked machines in a closet. If you want more specific suggestions, post a drawing of your space on graph paper. The commenters may be able to make suggestions of options you haven't thought of.

Where is the laundry currently? How big is the kitchn? One con is that machines in the kitchen loses valuable storage space.

I would really ask around your area. Right away I thought well they do it in Europe..but I bet the machines are smaller. I too worry it would really hinder resale. Maybe if we could see your spaces and you could give us more information as to what led to this idea???

Important to consider your laundry routine. For instance, we usually have two or three bins and separate lights/darks in the laundry room and often use a long drying rod for delicate clothing, so a kitchen location wouldn't be feasible.

If possible, it is always better to put them close to where you create the heaviest and most amount of laundry, that is, the bedroom and bathroom.

I should have added that my only options for laundry are in the kitchen or basement (where it currently is). Bathrooms in my house are tiny.

When we were looking at apartments with our son, many were older with remodeled kitchens, and had a washer added to the only practical space, under the kitchen counter. It seemed odd. He actually ended up taking an apartment in a building with a common laundry room in the basement. (Not that the machine in the kitchen was a deal breaker, but we did find them odd.)

The layout of your kitchen might make it work, though. Can you share the layout?

If the option is downstairs or in kitchen I think downstairs is still preferable. If it was a really small unit and in kitchen was only option then it would make sense

It's really common in Europe; I've stayed in home with an arrangement like that and it was not a big deal. I guess it depends on what other kitchen storage you have, and can you give up that space to the washing machine. I'd certainly prefer it over putting the laundry in the basement.

When I bought my home, I brought the washer and dryer to the kitchen from the basement. I gave up a large pantry to accommodate them behind closet doors. Love it! I want to do the laundry where I spend time during the day so I can process several loads without making trips to another part of the house and up/down stairs multiple times. The only downside is that I use my kitchen table to fold and store clean clothes until I am finished so the laundry has to be completed before dinner time.

jck910's photos show a perfect and desirable arrangement. Doors open when using the machines, closed and laundry area is out of sight and it all looks good.

A while back I was browsing lofts in Old Montreal, and saw one where the machines were in the island, facing away from the kitchen. I think maybe they faced the side, not the living space. I don’t recall if they had doors of some kind. But that seemed like a good compromise. As long as you aren’t during laundry while watching a quiet concert or a suspenseful movie on TV.

I mentioned machines in an island, and now I recall wondering how the dryer vents. So that is something you should keep in mind.

My friend’s house had the machines in the kitchen. They sure did take up a lot of space.

My "laundry" is in the garage. I would love it in the kitchen! It how ever is a very small kitchen and there is no room

I love my main floor laundry and no tons of trips . One trip from bedrooms to laundry and one trip back the rest all close to the kitchen where I spend a lot of my day. As for in the kitchen I think a lot depends on your space and I do not think it will hinder resale is done well.Post a to scale floor plan here and then we will have some idea f the space . UK here .. My washing machine is it the kitchen ,,don't have a dryer .. most older homes have them in the Kitchen .. most new builds ten to have a utility room ... no one bats an eye lid having them in the kitchen

I agree it totally depends on how you do laundry -
