I see what you mean. Trying to find a brown paint that looks like stain might be a challenge. I’m wondering if black might be a better choice. Hopefully you get more responses!

Why do you want it to match your banister? I think the color you chose looks nice. It works with the wood tones without being too dark. How does it look with adjacent rooms? Really the best way to chose a paint color is to bring large samples into your space with your lighting. Also, midway in a paint job it usually looks the worst because you are mixing old with new.

Thanks for the responses! I had heard that you should match the treads with the banister as a general rule. But I might be mistaken. I also was told black can be a little too dramatic almost like a Tim burton film (in the wrong environment) I don’t think I would want to go darker. But maybe lighter to match the flooring? I do agree a partially completed project will always look worse, but I wanted to stop myself before going all in on something that might turn out bad. Lol.

Brown paint always just looks like paint. Obviously the best option is stripping and refinishing the wood then it will match the handrail! If painting contrast is your friend, white with a runner or black.

I would love to be able to strip the stairs and bring them back to the original wood grain, but I think they have been coated so many times. I believe they are original to the house (1895 ish) so I’m not sure that would be an easy task. I haven’t really considered a runner on the stairs. I might revisit the idea of black. Thanks for the feedback!

If you try to match the floors you will have the same problem in fact, it might even look worse because they are a lighter color and it will be more obvious. You can try a paint visualizer on the Sherwin Williams website. Wood has variations of many different colors and stripes. A solid color will never give you the same look. The lighter you go the worse it will look, especially when matching wood with yellow and orange tones such as yours.

I have similar color wood floors and painted my staircase black, risers treads and all. If you go with black then you will want a runner. It is dramatic but sometimes a little drama is nice.

I have comment on my comment - I misunderstood your question. Agree that you shouldn’t try to match a paint to the stain.

I would suggest you paint the steps black, You'll never get a brown to look like wood steps. Another option is to paint everything white and install a runner. My daugher recetly did the white option with a runner and it looks great!

I vote NO to black. It's not going to look good. Maybe different shade like on those pictures.

Have you considered painting your walls a lighter off white? I think that might help reduce the number of colors. Then add a herringbone stair runner. I recently helped a client redo her vintage home entry staircase and the main floor. I think lightening your walls would look very good in your home.

Agree you have a bunch of different colors going on when you look at all the areas around the stairs.  I might go all white and paint the banister white too.  Then perhaps add a runner.  Heres just a few different looks.  The stairwell in general is looking dark and I would either go light with the stairs or all dark stairs with light walls.
